I need help! My recently adopted (2 months ago) 2 yr old Min Pin, Duke, barks at every sound/person/dog he hears outside the front windows. I tried the method of getting up each time he barks to say "Thank you, that is enough Duke" and that worked for a day or two until he started running from us because he knew we were going to make him stop. We live in an apartment complex and he can't be barking all the time, not to mention how annoying that is. If someone is in the room and he gets ready to bark, we tell him no and he doesn't bark, but if we are not in the room he barks and barks and barks. He KNOWS better, but seems to be testing us. This is very frustrating as one day he is not a barker and the next day he is. Any ideas other than squirting with water? And what is this clicker method about? You click the clicker tell him no and he stops? It doesn't make sense to me.

Try a toy called the Kong you can fill it with anything and your dog has to keep liking and liking to get the treats out of the Kong. If you fill it with his FAV treats then it should keep him busy. Also make sure that he is getting plenty of exercise. Since you just got him and you may not know what his back groung is than he could have been treated very badly while he was hearing other things so he always starts to bark when he hears these things. I would enroll in a basic training class with your dog. Also take him outside and let him hear all the sounds and see what he does if he is not barking than praise him TONS and when in side if he stops barking for just a second even praise in LOTS!!!! Good Luck!

I can't seem to stop the yapping either... the only way I'd heard works is a quick shot from a water pistol.... but I don't always have one in my hand!

well if you say something to the dog thats consecutive every time you squirt him or her, then when you say it he'll probably stop barking.
Whenever Holly barks, my Mums like "elizabeth get the hose pipe!!" and Holly legs it round the side of the house! :]
sounds like a really annoying problem.
Do you have a garden? does he bark when hes in it?
Is his barking agressive?
the clicker method i think is when he does soemthing GOOD give him a treat and click, and praise, and then later on just click and he knows hes done well. but im not sure.
you could try an ultrasound whistle mebs?

That was going to be my suggestion exactly :)
The thing is, you need more than one. Have a bottle in each room even. They are only a couple of dollars for a plastic bottle, so it's wise to invest in several. Have one handy in each room so you can get to it quickly and efficiently. Putting something distasteful in it, also helps such as Eucalyptus oil in the water, or a bit of citronella. My mum had exactly the same problem, but only had one bottle. I said mum get one for each room. Now she has them at hand and it works a treat.
