I agree with this. I have seen some HORRIBLE crops. my vet doesn't crop but he refers those who need it done to someone who is good @ it

I have seen some nightmarish crops.. even some where one ear looked very different from the other
Ugh and just look at Kenya's ears, I can't believe you had that doggy cropped **snicker** sorry for the hijack, I couldn't resist.

I hope that this isn't a catching trend to drives people to do it in the basement. I read a book awhile back (albeit an old book) and it had the procedure to crop pits ears at home...which included a board with a hole cut for their nose to go into so you could hold them down while you did it :yikes: that is NOT where I want to see cropping go...I'd much rather see a vet do a good job the right way.

good. Just because a vet can crop ears, doesn't mean they should.

It's an art, and takes years to learn how to create a beautiful crop. So many people don't understand that, and learn the hard way when they ask a vet to do it and end up with ears that don't stand, ears that look like sh**, ears with pockets, etc, etc.

love this post....kudos

Vintage Boxers- I know this is a little OT, and may be too personal a question (yes, you can feel free to tell me to shut up :lol-sign: ), but I notice of the three dogs in your siggy, two are cropped and one is not. Is there a reason you chose not to do the third? Though cropped is not the look I prefer for the breed, all three of yours are lovely.

i like the natural look, but i agree that if vets stop cropping the cropping won't stop. i've seen fighting dogs that have had their ears totally chopped off because it was a basement crop job gone wrong. so sad.

Vintage, the vet that my breeder uses for cropping her puppies hails from MT as well :) She flies in to Illinois just to do ears.

personally, i don't see that there is anything to be upset about here. If cropping/docking requires a specialist, and they are not specialists, then it seems that it would be a positive thing that they bow out rather than butcher a dog's ears and give those who would ban C/D more ammo against the procedure.....

I think no matter which side of the c/d debate you're on this is a good thing. It's not a law being passed saying that cropping and docking is illegal, it's a vet practice saying they can't/won't do it. I don't have a problem with that at all.

No prob! Loki (uncropped) was bought as a "maybe" show dog, but mainly for a pet. I got an insane 600 dollar quote for a crop for (i know better now) and decided against it as i couldn't afford it. His ears never layed correctly, and i learned he truly is pet quality and now he is a working dog and much beloved pet. The other dogs are at least 1.5-2 yrs younger than he is. Thank You very much...i kinda like em too *wink*

Good for them. Now if everybody would have the common sense to leave the poor dogs alone. It seem barbaric to me to cut off a dogs tail or crop their ears. I had yorkies, that unfortunately had their tails docked because it was common practice. But when my yorkie had her own pups, we did not get their tails docked. Our vet asked us if we were sure we didn't want the procedure and we said definitely not. They were beautiful dogs, and when they wagged their tails, it was so adorable.

And I prefer my dogs to look like the breed standard..

That said I'm glad Banfield isn't cropping these days as there are too many crappy people willing to do it yet aren't able to do it well.

Though if enough vets vocally discontinue it it may drive it underground. Enough vets are parroting the AVMA and AAHA's standpoints rather than making the decision on their own morals.

I do not think cropping should be illegal, and agree with you that if your going to have it done it should be done by an experienced vet.

HOWEVER, The fact that the AKC continues to make unnecessary cosmetic surgery a manditory part of breed standards is absolutely disgusting. It has nothing to do with perserving the breed.

It is nearly as disgusting if people are cropping and docking their poor dogs simply to please the AKC.

But it's not the AKC or the CKC. The yare a registering body.. nothing more. It is up to the parent clubs of each and every breed. They set the standards, and choose to loosen them. AKC doesn't write the breed standard for any breed.

Allowing floppy eared boxers to play AKC conformation.. Boxer club of America's call, not the AKCs.. Tailed cockers playing in CKC conformation.. American cocker club of Canada's call. Not the CKCs.

The Parent club decides the standard not the registration body. The registration body is there to registry the dog and keep records. *that* is what they should do. They should not try to demand that a breed does this or that. They are not breed specialists they aer supposed to be record keeper.

I'm glad they stopped. To many people think all cropping is is cutting off the ear. They charge people insane amounts for horrible crops. They dock tails to short. In general they don't admit that they don't know what they are doing.

Cropping and docking is a personal choice and a personal taste. I like my dogs cropped and docked. Considering that they zonk out in someones lap when they are getting posts changed I have a hard time feeling that they spend their lives upset over what was done to them at 7 weeks of age. Considering that they can't remember to not jump on the cat five seconds after they just got smacked by the same cat laying in the same position I don't really think it bothers them that it happened.

Not everyone agrees on everything. That includes cropping and docking, spay and neuter, pediatrician spay and neuter, training styles, crating, feeding... the list goes on and on.

I'll add that many people say 'it is just to please the owner' but then so many things are just to please the owner. The breed, the gender, the grooming, the ownership of the dog itself. We make dozens of choices of taste when we get pets.

I'm glad that this place is stopping a practice that they were not up to doing properly.

Personally I think it's sick to crop and dock and I would never do that to a dog myself or rather to word that better, have it done. But I know a lot of people here do like the look of it. But I don't like the idea of humans having cosmetic surgery either but it is a personal choice.

I would like to know, is it normal for labs to have their tails docked? The other day I saw several labs with their tails docked, which I have never seen before with labs. Just curious.
