My wife and I finally bit the bullet and bought a house. We were very excited about having a back yard for the first time in our relationship - we've been in apartments for over a decade.

The trouble is, the back yard totally reeks of dog pee. The yard is long and narrow - if the dog went all the way to the back everything would be fine. However, he prefers to pee right at the bottom of the steps out the back door, right next to the patio furniture!

I'm sure there are some easy solutions to this problem. Help!

To help break down the smell you can get a product like stable boy

to break down the urine so the smell goes.

Is it your dog who is peeing there? Or are you saying it smells from a previous dog?

Teach him to go where you want him to go after you treat the soil. Same as house breaking, take him there and make a big deal of his pleasing you by going where you want him to go. Even take some of the soil where he has urinated and plant it in a new place. Put him on a leash when you go out and march him right past his old place. Don't really give him a choice about it in the beginning. He's smart he will figure it out.

I would water the back lawn every couple of days if you aren't getting rain. As Smkie wrote, take control of the potty expeditions.
