The past couple of days I've had some pain in my lower back. I first noticed it when I was out riding but I still had 2 horses to ride so I we t ahead and it didn't seem to get any worse. Had a bath and a mild painkiller and it seemed fine.

Got to this morning and i felt grand but noticed it again when I started riding. Again I ignored it and by the time I was on my last horse it was obviously worse. We were only going for a quick spin up the beach so i kept going. I ended up losing control of my horse twice and going flying off. Went to go home and I wasn't sure of I'd actually be able to get off and untack him so I called for help.

That was all fine, I took a stronger painkiller when I got home and didn't do much. Tonight I took another strong painkiller and waited half an hour for it to kick in before I went to sort out horses and even with the pain killer it was as bad as earlier. On Scale of 1-10 this was about a 7.

Any idea of what this could be? It's mostly on my left side and seems to be mostly when I move or end for something. There's always a dull pain though that's easily ignored. It's the sharp pain that worries me! What can I do about it? Obviously painkillers arent working.

I don't mess with back pain. I'd be booking an appointment with my chiropractor to get it looked at. The $20 copay would be worth the peace of mind, no question.

Depends on your age.

I will pull a back muscle from time to time (I'm 20) and I don't typically worry about it. Usually 2-3 days of just chilling out (no lifting or anything) plus occasional ice and Advil (not Tylenol) will give me a better idea if I need to go to the Dr. or not. It sounds to me like being active aggravated what would otherwise have been a minor tweak.

Feel better!

ETA that if you are a little older I would definitely hit up your doctor about it and see if there's anything that they can do about it.

I'd second the good chiro -- one that will tell you if it's something he can take care of or if you need to see a doc, or if it's a soft tissue injury of some sort that needs rest.

Injuries don't respect age, although conditioning does play a part -- but I'm not a teenager by a long shot, and definitely NOT a boy and I do things in my workouts that would send most people, even the gym rats, to physical therapy, lol.

But all it takes is one wrong move to start a problem and then aggravating it repeatedly (like riding) and anyone can wind up with something that needs to be attended to and a back injury, even something minor, that's not taken care of can have lasting repercussions.

...I meant that in the sense that he's a teenage boy... he probably has horrible posture and tries to lift heavy **** with his back :p

That or I know him too well :lol-sign:

Try to see a physical therapist!

What I can tell you...as a physical therapist...is that you don't really need to worry about serious damage or anything. Sounds like a vertebrae is just moving as well (they have to move to allow motion) as it should (think of it as a bit 'stuck'), which is no big deal, but doesn't feel good. The SOONER you go, usually the quicker the fix can be. Sometimes they just need some nice encouragement :)

Gently moving through some motion can sometimes help ease things up:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0l9f62bu364&feature=relmfu (lol this video is funny)...just start with non-painful range of motion & try to ease into areas that are a bit more painful. As long as when you kinda return to neutral, the pain diminishes, you are safe to gently try to increase your range. Think about engaging your abs to do this (but also breathe!)

Here is another: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbjsfyjD-gM&feature=related (start slow!)

I can't get to see anyone until early next week. Everyone's busy working until then.

Yeah jess is right, I have terrible posture and I was throwing bales of sawdust round the other day as well. Plus I was racing horses down a narrow twisty lane. I guess I dont really help myself at all lol.

Thanks for the links dreeza! I'll start working through them today.

Thanks for all you're advice everyone!
