When I got to work last night I saw that they only had two of us working night shift. Then I saw 4 charts off to the side with names on them. I instantly thought "hmmm... there are 4 babies to catch and only 2 of us with other babies already here including 2 in the unit"

Dayshift says "oh don't worry... none of those inductions are doing anything, they won't deliver tonight" I give a sigh of relief and then the phone rings.

It's labor and delivery and they say "are you guys ready for this baby?" I'm like "what baby?" Apparently one of the 4 delivered just before I got there.

So... no big deal.. I'll do my assessments on the babies I already had and then catch this new one in a little bit. Well..... that was wishful thinking.

I no sooner get one assessment done and they bring this new baby. I catch that one and and find out they're about to deliver 3 more one right after the other. I think "oh crap"

I get that one admitted and try and get my other babies done.... only to get another call from labor and delivery "we need you now in 402 for decels and prematurity" So, off I go running to that delivery.

I'm walking out of that delivery after the baby is born and ends up doing fine and they stop me as I walked by and said "oh, by the way... we're gonna section 403 in a little bit for failure to progress"

Now I'm thinking "somebody better get me a float because I'm drowning" I run back to the nursery and tell my co worker what's happening and then have to run to this c-section as my preemie baby has to wait to be admitted (but he was fine) I'm trying to prioritize my time when they bursted my bubble and told me they had another one pushing.... and that we had to attend that delivery first ... for narcotics that the mother had as well as being premature. That one delivers minutes later and they're already setting up in the OR for the c-section.

I barely have enough time to run to the nursery to give my co worker an update and get back to labor and delivery and they're like "you better hurry.. she's already on the table and they're already cutting!" I haven't even gotten my OR attire on yet...lol. I just barely made it in time. They already made the incision through the abdomen and were at the uterus ready to cut when I walked in with the clinician.

I come back from the section with that baby about 20 minutes later to find they had already brought my first preemie in and my coworker was trying to start that admission for me. Then as I am trying to admit the new c-section baby, they call and tell me they are bringing the other preemie to the nursery. I begged them for a few more minutes so I could catch my breath and get organized.

So... we busted our humps catching all these deliveries. They all delivered in the first 2 1/2 hours into the shift. Then we had to do all the paper work and charting for all those babies.

The night sure did fly by. We really didn't have time to take a dinner break. I was so glad one of the girls came in to help us that they had flexed in the beginning of the shift. At least all the babies that were born were doing fine. And they were all soooooo cute! It was a real busy night, but it wasn't a bad night. We are averaging about 100 babies a month at our little community hospital... lol. That's a lot for us... we were used to 50 to 70 a month.

One of the babies I was bathing decided to puke right in the middle of her first bath.. it was the never ending puke and gag session. I washed her all up again and fixed her hair all pretty and put a bow in it and saw this one patch of hair that was matted down even after washing her hair and scrubbing it with a brush. I made the mistake of trying to fluff up the wad of hair with my bare fingers... it was a nasty blood clot from the delivery that had not come off with the washing...ewwwww. That will teach me to take my gloves off too soon...lol.

I know I grump and groan sometimes about my "rough" nights at work... but this is truly my favorite job I've ever had. I can't imagine doing anything else. It is probably one of the most rewarding jobs. Sure it has it's bad times too.... but the good far out weigh the bad. I'm so happy for you starting your classes next year. Will you be in the nursing program then or taking your pre requisites?

I am going to have to get my GED first, but if I am not correct, the community college offers programs to take while doing your GED. I believe it is called Allied Science. That program gives you two college credits each year towards your nursing degree AND two regular high school credits.

They also put you to work at local hospitals, assisting with different things. Mostly easy stuff from what I have heard. They then help you finish getting your degree, then they will help you look for a place of employment also.

I am excited, I know I am going to love this job :)

Wow, that's busy! I know the hospital we had Kenny at was busy like that as well. There is only 2 hospitals in that area that have a labor and delivery ward. They were so busy though I know they pushed me and everyone out before we should have. I was out on Wednesday morning, which was two days after we had a c-section with Kenny. I stayed in bed that monday, walked around on tuesday, and walked out the door on wednesday. With Emily I was in the hospital for almost a week!

Yup, they were both c-sections. Emily might have been able to be natural if Mark had listened to me earlier and gotten me to the hospital in time (I had to complain and nag him for almost 12 hours:mad: ) HIS theory was "your not going into labor it's your due date NOBODY has their baby on it's due date it's just gas". With Emily I wanted to leave after a couple days but they wouldn't let me I was in for almost a week before they finally let me go home (and by that time Mark's vacation was all used up and he had to go back to work).

I'm in a smaller community hospital... somewhere around 200 bed facility. We average around 20 or so births a week... give or take a few.

We keep our vag deliveries 48 hours... on occasion they will go home at 24 hours if they choose to and their baby is GBS negative.

We keep our sections a minimum of 2 days but usually 3. Every so often you will get a momma who has done really well after a c-section and is up and moving around good who will choose to go home on the 2nd day. But we encourage them to stay the 3rd day because MOST insurances will pay for that 3rd day.

We have a hospital here in Tampa called St. Joseph Women's and the only thing they do is deliver babies. When i had my last 7 years ago, I was induced, i went in at 8:00am and was gone by 10 am the following morning.

When the insurance companies were sending the momma's home at 24 hours or less after delivery they had lots of problems.

They found out that it was costing them more money in the long run because some of these women were having post partum hemorrhages... the babies were getting jaundiced and other issues.

A baby doesn't usually start the jaundice until the second day of life. I can't even imagine going home at 24 hours.. you'd be surprised what one extra day can do. It gives the nurses the ability to get so much teaching done to first time parents or ones that just need the education. It also gives the mom a chance to heal before having to go home and care for a newborn as well as herself.
