I wonder if some of the so called "minis" that people see that really do look like Aussies really are within the small side of the standard.

The ones I know are registered North American Sheppards, and the ones I don't know are still listed as that on the gate lists at trials. But the breeders I know show conf, herd test, health test, and often show in agility or obed... so I can see why they look like mini aussies vs byb ones.

From the link Laurelin posted:

We also found that some aussie traits are not suitable in this small a dog.. THE "HERDING instinct" is not Recommended in the TOY in our opinion.
So we selectively breed OUT the herding and any overly protective instincts from our breeding group. - they do work hard to keep our yard Crow free.. and haven't seen a rabbit in years.. Since HOLLY was a very docile, loving dog that would rather sit at your feet than run wildly this became our foundation line.. we have her daughter- tootsie, and son :lil guy to continue her line.
yea... why again are you calling them toy Aussies then?

I have what i believe to be a toy Austalian Shepherd. He was a rescue..but he does resemble one and I have heard many times that he looks like an Aussie (But hes under 10 pounds). I obviously don't know his background...and I don't know why he doesn't have a tail (whether it was docked, or he was born without one..which is probably not likely). We are actually going to start agility training in a couple months cause I definitely see potential. Hes a high jumper, has tons of energy, he is very smart and eager to learn.

it's possible, but I see more spaniel in him than much else. Just because a dog has a docked tail doesn't mean it's an Aussie. Good luck with agility!
