Max was housebroken when we got him at 4 months old thanks to his foster parent. He might have had a few accidents when we first got him but other than that he had no problems. Even when he was dying and we couldn't get him outside the poor dog held it until he just couldn't anymore. He cried and cried because he had to go out, my dad and uncle tried carrying him out but he was so uncomfortable being held like that that he couldn't go. Luckily he only had to go through that for the one night.

Phoebe didn't get housebroken until a little over a year old. Her owners used the "when we come home from work and there's a puddle we shove her face in it and smack her" or otherwise hit her when she had an accident. So instead of learning where to go to the bathroom she learned that she couldn't go in the bedroom, so she went under the couch, but she eventually got caught so they knew if she went under there she was gonna pee, so she learned that wasn't safe, so then she found out that if she went on the dark green carpet when they were not in the room they wouldn't notice. They didn't for several months until it really started to smell and uncle knelt down to sniff the carpet and his knees were soaked. Lifted up the carpet and the entire floor was drenched in pee.
Teaching them the one place to go is so much easier than teaching the hundreds of places not to go.
Anyway now she's housebroken unless they leave her home way too long (10-11 hours) and she'll have an accident. They don't punish her for that though because they know it's their fault.

mushroom used to be 100% but now i sometimes have issues with him getting into pissing wars with steve.

luce is pretty reliable. she's had one accident in the past i don't know how many years. but she doesn't ask to go out. she's just well scheduled.

we won't talk about steve.

(let's just say that housebreaking is NOT my strong suit!)

Buddy (Golden Retriever): 100% The first night we brought him home from the shelter he had one accident ... but he was a nervous wreck that night so we attribute it to that. He's never had an accident since.

But Buddy may be one of those dogs that's MORE than 100% .. because like a few others have mentioned he doesn't like rain either and will hold it for-freaking-ever ... either until we drag him outside or the rain lets up. Fortunately it doesn't rain much here!

Riley (West Highland White Terrier): 98% He still has an occasional accident but he's still young, and as a little dog he has that fast metabolism thing going on. (He's not much bigger than Buddy's head! :D )

both boys are reliably trained--unless my son leaves his bedroom door open. For some reason they think it is ok to use that room as their personal bathroom. If that door is closed--no problems.
Both boys were trained when I got them--both came from a shelter, so wasn't sure how they would do in a home. Thanks to Pam who had Wilson for a week before he got here--she got his marking under control so that I had no issues when he arrived here. Baxter has been reliable from the beginning. Although he too hates the rain.

Upendi is 100% I can't even remember the last time she had an accident.

Mina is 99.999% there. She had an accident a month or two ago, but it's because I wasn't paying enough attention and didn't realize she was asking to go out.

Cupid is at 95%, but he will go in the house if you don't recognize his signals. As long as he is given the opportunity to go out every three or four hours, he's fine.

Clayton is at 85%. He is better at letting me know when he needs to go out, but he needs to be let out more often and I don't always make it. He'll get there, though. Or maybe I should say I will get him there.

Both of mine use pee pads when I am away from home. They are small and one had to have bladder stone removal surgery, so I don't want them to have to hold it all day.

Both of mine are 100% potty trained, I completely trust them in the house, as well as in anyone else's house. The last accident was last spring, when they came back from the boarding kennel, Molly peed in the house (one reason why I don't like to board them, they get confused about where to go potty).

This site was hugely helpful in understanding how to correctly potty train Molly :)

Buster would rather loose a leg than have an accident in the house. If he does though, because I havn't let him out they are always right by the back door and he gets this awful guilty look and cringes eventhough I don't care.
He was house trained quiet harshly though, it worked but I wouldn't use those methods again.
He must have a bladder the size of a swimming pool though, I've seen him hang on for 15 or 20 hours a few times when I've done some marathon sleeps or havn't taken him out right before bed.

Awww. Yay! :) I was hoping she'd be good. :D The thing with Cocoa, since they were allowed to go in the house for so long - my mom actually cemented in and put a drain in the back porch so they COULD go potty in the house - I don't think she'd ever be the type to hold it in for hours and hours. I always had plans on teaching Cocoa to do the bell thing at the door, but of course have not yet had the chance.
I would offer to try and teach her that, but that would be a lie lol. Maddie will tell me if one of the others have to go out. She'll signal me that she hasnto go, I'll get up and let whoever wants to go out, and she'll just wait on he stairs while the there go. I know it sounds crazy, but I've learned the others "poop face" so when Maddie signals me that she needs to go out, I can tell by looking who *really* needs to go, and who doesn't :rofl1:

OMG.........it's funny you mention a certain "poop face" Brattina :rofl1:

Orson has a "poop face" and he usually accompanies that with a very low noise in the back of his throat! He has two different ways of asking to go potty........one is his regular "pee" noise (sort of a whine) and sometimes after he pees he will then go poop too. But when he gets his poop face and that low noise in his throat......he has to poop NAO! No time to wait! LOL

Maggie is 100%, often even if sick (she'll wake me up to go out if she's sick, even for vomit). She's gone up to 16 hours for urine and 32 for poop (while we were working on teaching a potty cue intensively).

Ziva is 100% up to about 10-11 hours (my longest day at work), but she sometimes forgets to fully empty outside so I have to make sure she goes before long absences.

Kes appears fully housetrained, but I've not tested it - he goes out every 2-3 hours if loose in the house, every 4-6 if tethered, and is good for up to 11 if crated (that was an exceptionally looong day at work - only happened once). I guess he's well cratetrained but probably not 100% housetrained.

Riley is 1000000% housebroken!! He was completely housebroken by 5 months old (his last accident the house was the night he was neutered, he was dopey and just squated in my room, Not his fault!). Since then he has only had ONE diarrhea accident in the house. He will hold it until he literally explodes. Poor baby. He will whine in the middle of the night to go out if he has to, but Wont go inside!

Dont get me started on vomiting inside!:( He is a bilious vomiter, and seems to prefer to vomit on the carpet or rug instead of the tile. He will go to the door and try to get outside if someone is home though.

Meg is 100%. And she has a iron bladder. If she gets desperate, there is a lot of staring at me, then running downstairs when I make eye contact. This went on for over an hour at one point while I was trying to figure out what her issue was!

Definitely not. He's housebroken to the point where he will ask to go out if he needs to and can be trusted not to pee/poop in the house when left unsupervised for 8-10 hours (but I still crate him or confine him if someone isn't home). But I had to potty-train him room by room. No, I'm not kidding. He doesn't understand that the ENTIRE house is a no-potty zone, just the areas I've trained him to. The basement and a few other rooms that are seldom used are ones he will go in if given the opportunity, so I close them off.

He wont go in a different house or the pet stores as long as he is on leash and with me at all times, but I wouldn't call that 100%.

Finn is the new pup in the pack and still very young. All the rest are house trained. Shamus can hold it all day if pressed...though I never do that to him on purpose.(he has a crazy pee-pee dance!) I have someone go to my house to let him out on days I work. The rest are outdoors most of the daytime hours.
Finn is getting it fast though. 2 days ago he was trying to hold it...he really had to go and I missed the signs! My front door was open but there is a glass "screen door". He pee-peed right against the glass door. Poor thing. I picked him up and took him outside. No scolding just walking him around to let him finish the deed! At least he stayed off the carpet! Finn is crate training. So when I'm not home to keep an eye on things he is in his crate. Shamus is the only dog with full run of the house.

Peewee is 100% potty trained. Ivan welllllll I would say 99.9% of the time he is. 2 or 3 times a year we have marking pee, not quite sure what brings it on. Then we have the occasional what I call the HEY asshole, I have to pee SEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE(this normally occurs early in the morning when the hubby has just gotten home from work and isn't paying attention to him). Ivan is one of those silent askers. He runs from the back door to the living room, stares at you till you look at him then runs back. The hubby doesn't always pay attention to him:rolleyes:. He will do this for a while and if you don't let him out he will pee on something while looking at you the whole time.

Finn's about 98%, but he still goes out every 2-3 hours when loose because he hasn't had an accident in almost two months, and I don't want to jinx it. I'm hoping I can wean down the hours so he can stay inside longer without issue. In his crate he can hold upwards of 12 hours (only happened twice, don't think me cruel!).

I'm conditioning him to let me know when he has to go out, and it's been working well. He absolutely understands that he's not supposed to go inside, but he needs assurance of how to TELL em to go out. :)
