Except for my neighbor whos' dog gets loose on occasion and poops in my yard, all the dogs arou nd here for the most part are kept contained, and are inside dogs. No barking at night, pretty quiet.

I'm not "normal" but just barely. My parents are holding me back and it sucks.

I live in a town in a farming area. Outside the city limits lots of dogs run free like farm dogs. In town most dogs are secured, either by fence or by chains. The chained dogs do chew through their ropes and get free though. Most big dogs are outside dogs, mine are too(saddly). I don't think these big dogs are allowed in ever unlike mine. The little dogs are kept inside so it's kind of hard to tell just how many there are. Judging from the amount of walking I see done around town they may just be fat.

The dogs just get dog food, they don't get nice well balanced diets. They get what ever the store sells.

Very few dogs are well trained. A few know sit, heel, ect, but they stopped giving obedience lessons years ago and so now dogs don't get trained. None of them even match Duke or Baron when it comes to number of commands.

Im the only SANE dog owner here if you ask me. I know people who can "get sick" of thier dog, take it out back, shoot it, then 2 months later buy a puppy!

These dogs are NOT kept inside because they "aren't potty trained" or "The d*** thing S**** in the house!" So they are tied out side with NO inside time what so ever...

I have had a close family friend tell me that "You should take bud, hes too hyper and you can't do anything with him... You could re-home him..." She also said "If he doesn't stop running, we are gonnah ave to get rid of him, or put him down". I dont hold this aginst the lady, because since thier first dog, she has been saying "No more dogs!" But her hubby and kids keep getting them...

So, really, if you ask me, I am the only normal one because a/ I dont let my dogs run the town. b/ I LOVE my dogs! c/ I keep my dogs IN the house and d/ I get upset if my dog somehow gets out of our fence and runs away.

we live in the country. most dogs roam with coyotes, are not fixed, or live in kennels or are chained up.
most dogs are herding dogs or hunting dogs. no one walks their dog. you would be walking on a road if you did.

if a dog comes on your property, you shoot it. if it chases your livestock, you shoot it. sounds mean, but livestock isn't cheap these days.

sly and mickey have their own 50' x 60' pen that they stay in during the day. at night we put them in their crates that are in our garage during the night. the cats come in too. my dad would like the dogs to stay in the pen all the time and not in the garage, i have no problem with it, but
1. sly and mickey bark with the coyotes and,
2. coyotes can jump 6' fencing.

They are still part of the family. we are with them all the time working them. just because they live outside doesn't mean they are not part of the family.
i would say that we are above the normal around here.

I actually had a similar question I was thinking about posting, asking if it was a regional thing since I just recently moved and I was normal back home in south Fl, people walked their dogs, got them groomed, some kept them outside during the day then inside at night, generally very well cared for and in all my time living in my neighborhood I cant remember any dog that was not fixed. Now that Im in SC, almost every single dog is outside in a fenced in yard or small chain link kennel, I would say 2/3 of the neighborhood has dogs and in two months of living here I have only seen ONE other person walking their dog. Also, we have already run into two unneutered males that got loose.

It was definately a big culture shock for me, I knew people out in the country usually treat dogs differently because there is a different viewpoint, but I was moving from a middle class neighborhood to another middle class neighborhood, I thought things would be more similar when it came to dogs. I was soooo wrong. Is it a regional thing?

I'm lucky that I live on a street and in a neighborhood where people really do care about their dogs. So that's a wonderful thing!

But I think I'm not the "normal" dog owner where I live because:

I have 4 dogs (most people are shocked to hear that and think I'm nuts)
I have a stroller for my dogs ( I use them for crowded areas, ect not to replace a walk)
I always have their hair bows in and their outfits on(when it is chilly, rainy, or I just feel like dressing them up)
They have nicer carriers than my purses
I take them for at least 3 walks a day, 2 at a time, so that means 6 walks a day for mom!
I travel 2 hours to get them Canidae from a store that sells it.
I only feed all natural or home made treats.
I plan "field trips" to different parks, and places.
I rarely leave them more than 3 hours without a pet sitter.
I never allow them off leash.

Those are some ways I'm different from other owners. I love my furbabies <3

I think so.

I think there is a good standard of dog care around here generally.

You never see loose dogs, strays or anything like that.

We are a nation of animal lovers, and not afraid to speak up. And we have the RSPCA - you have to maintain a standard or you are liable to be prosecuted.

Of course, people do neglect/abuse (it's a sad fact of life) - but you can't just let your dog roam, or leave it chained up.

Most dogs you meet are trained to some degree and have manners.
