i NEVER give my dogs bones. the can splinter and get stuck in their throat or intestines. if they splinter and get stuck the dog can have trouble with bowel movements, internal bleeding, etc. i worked as a vet tech in S.C. and a JRT mix came in whose owner had given him chicken bones (the worst at splintering). this poor dog cried every time he tried to poop...he was given enemas that didn't help (and he cried)...the vet finally had to reach in with some fingers (gloved) and pull out the splintered bones (and poo). all of this because his owner gave him bones. i'll never understand why people that care so much about their dogs give them things that can harm and potentially kill them!

I gave my dog a highly recommended Elk bone (due to beef allergies) and only let her chew it for 10 mins.(supervised). That night when I went to brush her teeth, I discovered that she had totally busted an upper molar. She has surgery for an extraction at noon tomorrow. I'd be careful...I so wish that she could have real bones because anything synthetic causes allergy problems, but I wasn't prepared for this:( I'm in a total panic because she has to go under for this (of course) and this is a 3 root tooth...please send her cyber good Luck...I'm soooo worried, she's 3 years old...and I feel like I gave birth to her..my furry daughter:(

I feed my dog rehide bones, he loves them. I don't buy them often, only for a special treat. When I do buy him one, he chews under supervision and when I'm done watching him I take it and put it away for another time. Bones have never harmed him.

I would only feed raw hide bones, never dental (raw hide will still clean their teeth from scraping against them). The dental bones are too easy to chew so dogs can eat them fairly quickly and can cause your dog to vomit.

Do not feed chicken or pork chop bones, those ones splinter easily and can cut your dogs throat, or choke them.

Yes, do not feed them chicken bones! My girl got into the garbage onces and ate some chicken wings, I thought she was going to die! She was crying and vomitting for 2 days straight!

But you can get smoked big beef bones for about 10-20$. They get one every two weeks and everytime I take them to the vet she always compliments them on their bright clean whites!

Raw bones are fine for most dogs.
I give Dante raw turkey necks, he loves it when I head for the freezer!!

fine then...let me rephrase...certain kinds of bones can splinter and harm or kill your dog. if you don't believe it then keep on doing it...it's not my business what you do with your dog. i am just telling you from my experience as a vet tech, and also what another poster on here said about her dog needing dental surgery after chewing on a bone.
only ONE time did my Lab ever get a bone (hubby reminded me after the post) and it was a HUGE hambone. she was a pup and we only let her have it long enough to get the meaty leftovers and we took it from her when she started cracking the bone. i brush our dogs teeth with a vet approved tooth brush and flavored doggie toothpaste. it tastes good and her teeth look good too.

We give raw marrow bones from the butcher. Teeth are spotless. We do stay away from smaller bones, though, and NEVER cook them.

Honestly, my dog has cracked a molar - it was a very minor chip actually, and it was on a smoked marrow bone. NOT raw. I don't feed rec bones anywho, it's important to watch your dog, if they are chewing too vigorously and won't ease up then weight-bearing bones are not safe for them.

I feed my pups raw chicken bones often! They love chicken wings, leg quarters, necks and backs. I watch them extremely carefully, and I even hold Fozzie's for him. My boss was a Vet tech for the Vet who created Natura, which is one of the best lines of kibble out there... and she also feeds her dogs raw meaty bones for their teeth and for better physical condition/performance. I trust her opinion just about over ANYone's, she is seriously well-educated about canine nutrition. Labbreeder, I'm guessing the splintered chicken bones WERE cooked? That IS super dangerous, and something I would never even think of feeding. When my dogs eat chicken bones, they gnaw them into tiny, soft pieces that are very easily digestible - and I check the hardness of the pieces - not even a sign of bone in their poops. And Gonzo has NO plaque in sight since feeding raw. I, on the other hand, feel it's unfair to feed a dog synthetic chews for dental hygeine, rather than perfectly safe and very healthy raw meaty bones. Guess we have different opinions =P
