Are there any signs to tell what size of dog a puppy will be?

Since my dog Toby is a little mutt I'm not sure how big he will grow to be and I was just wondering are there things to look for that determine the size? His mom is a Chihuahua/Pekingnese mix and his dad is a Spaniel/Lab mix......:)

I keep looking at his teeth and they really look like a Chihuahua's teeth (especially when he lays on his back) and his front feet look like a Pekingnese and his cute little pop head looks like both of those breeds. I dont really see the dad part of him yet.

Thanks Tammy,

Your pup's teeth will look small right now because they are baby teeth and will fall out around four months when his adult teeth start to grow in.

As far as size goes, there is no way to tell for sure...just wait and see and let it be a surprise:) If I had to guess, I would say 20-25 lbs.

Very cute either way:)

Isn't there some rule of thumb where at a certain age, if you double the weight the dog is at that point, that is most likely what the dog will end up being fully grown?

Its not a "for sure" thing, but you can guess by how big the paws are compared to the rest of the pup... large breed puppies often have large goofy paws that doesn't match the rest of their body - so cute

Here's a Age-Weight Chart

Very cute puppy!! How old is he in the pic?? ;)

Genital size has nothing to do with it. Especially since a pups (male) doesn't fully finish growing for almost a year. :p

Paw size tells a great deal. I'd say yours might be 30 some lbs full grown. Just a guesstimate though. :)

I think I've been told that if you double the pups weight at 4(?) months, you'll get a rough idea of adult size. Not sure if that's true or not, or if I even have the correct age. At any rate, paw size can also be an indicator although it certainly didn't work for Morgan (her paws for huge when she was a young pup, and I can tell she'snot going to be huge as an adult now). Judging by your signature picture, I think your pup will be about 20-30lbs or so.

Where on earth did the idea of measuring the dogs penis come from?? What if i had a female puppy......how would i measure then? LOL

I always beleived that the paw size is a good indication :)

Obviously, you would measure in depth. =P hehe

But, ewww, how would you even measure your dogs genitals? That completely grosses me out. Just picturing it.

I have heard that it depends. With small breeds, they stop growing at about 6 months. Large breeds obviously can continue to grow well past 12 months. If the dog is small/medium breed, I would think doubling the weight at 3-4 months would give you a good idea. You can also ask your Vet for their opinion.

I'm really shocked that a Chi/Peke could give birth to puppies from a Lab mix! Poor, poor little dog!

Thanks for all the replies but sorta could've done without the genital one:lol-sign: anyhoo.....

Brattina, Toby was 6 weeks old in the picture and he is now 8 wks and is about 5lbs and according to the chart he will be considered a small dog (up to 20 lbs), thanks for the link!

I'm really hoping Toby stays small and that I can really do this puppy training right.....we have an outside dog that is about 40 lbs but I've never had my very own inside puppy, I really wanted and needed a puppy and I got what I got, he is a cutie pie isnt he?

Yes, the Chi/Peke and Spaniel/Lab is hard to imagine....:yikes: I guess that's why there were only three puppies and BTW Toby is the runt!
