Are my dogs fighting or playing?

My two dogs (Bagel, female welsh corgi mix and Rocket, a shepard mix) have this habit of growling at each other for a long time and wrestling. They show their teeth and bite each other, but not any deep bites or anything (more like nipping). I don't know whether they are play wrestling or are fighting. I do seperate them for a little bit for the day (take one dog out for a walk, then take the other a little later), but it doesn't seem to help too much... which leads me to believe they are just playing. But it does seem a bit rough, so I'm really confused. Any thoughts?

It sounds like playing. Are they crouching down on their forelegs?

If they get too rough, I think forcing a cool down period is perfectly fine.

I agree. Just keep an eye out to make sure they are playing. Here's what my 2 do when they play. Other people would probably think they were fighting, but they're not.

Heh, yeah they sorta look like that. Acutally, Bagel is usually lying down (I really think she's just lazy) and Rocket will poke her until she finally gets up and tries to wrestle him down. Never happens though, since Rocket is 3 times her weight, but it's funny to see her try.

I have that when my black lab Granddog comes over. He wants to play rough with Chip and Chip doesn't really like it unless it's tug of war with a rope etc. Rudy will punch him and punch him with his nose to try to start something. They're the best of friends, but boy Chip's glad when he goes home.!!

 That was a lucky shot.

My two old english sheepdogs are constantly growling and tugging toys, they wrestle a lot but it does not go beyond that. Just pay attention to the growling tones, it if goes very low in tone or loud, or one of them is showing only the front teeth, then a cooldown period should be enforced before they get aggressive. It will be very rare that they really fight, but any aggresive tendencies must be controlled.
