Apparently I'm a murderer too... oops.
Lol... I'm a bit new to this forum, but I did want to jump in and add a few things.
I've been working with rescues for a large portion of my teen and adult years, and many of them ARE very rescue-nazi. They're very very determined to be the solution to the overpopulation problem, or the stray-problem, etc. And they really aren't, they're helping, yes, but they aren't the solution either.
I can only foster occasionally, as I'm a renter, and live in a townhouse - so it strongly depends on where I'm living, my landlord of the time, and even(as is currently the problem), when I'm on medical leave. So when I stop fostering for a while, rescue workers flip out on me, guilt-trip me about dying dogs, and other blanket statements and slander, and make me feel like crap for stopping for a SHORT period of time, even though I can still help out with adoption events, fundraising, training, walking, sitting, etc. So... I hear ya, and I've been into rescue for YEARS!
All my current dogs/animals are all rescues too... But I fully intend for my next dog to be from a breeder(still stuck between breeds, but have a good breeder already if I go with one of them), so I must be a murderer too.
Also, my current rescue Beagle, Charlie, is not neutered - so many rescues automatically condemn me, unless they've worked with me personally. Due to his epilepsy and other reasons, I opted to not neuter him. However, I DO take the necessary precautions to ensure he never gets loose and never breeds with another dog. Been there, done that, and he's not hard to handle my any means. But I'm apparently adding to the dogs in the shelter automatically, because he SOMEHOW, without getting loose, or near an intact female, managed to knock up some dog that I don't know about, or at least that's how such people view it..
I had to unfriend a couple people for the constant death row puppies and kitties posts. What needs to change is the whole system, and I'm pretty sure that the emotionally blackmailing facebook posts are not all that effective.
Well, to be fair, your shelter is not representative of every shelter in the country. There are rarely, if ever, puppies at my local shelters. We do have a rescue group (or two) that imports puppies from The South, but they charge so much for the puppies and they bring them up in these big semi/tractor trailer trucks. They seem super sketchy.
I agree with our other two paragraphs, though!
Now, I do share pictures that the shelter I volunteer with posts of available dogs and cats, even if they are on the "at risk" list, because it lets people who wouldn't otherwise see them see them, and it does help get them adopted. I don't add any "GET THIS CRITTER OR YOU MIGHT AS WELL KILL IT YOURSELF" crap, but I don't see anything wrong with getting the animals out there.
That's kind of funny, because my shelter is one of those southern shelters that sends puppies up to the northeast on the trailer trucks to rescue groups that charge $500 a dog haha. No matter how much they charge, those rescue groups are the reason why our euthanasia of puppies has dropped almost down to zero, so I can't fault them
Stuff like this is why not having friends who are as into dogs as I am is kind of nice XD
I mean it gets annoying when you have to explain stuff sometimes. But stuff like this reminds me why I like it.
Sometimes you just have to ignore. Right now there's a 20 year old Chi that was 'dumped by horrible owners' and right away a bunch of people had death threats. Really? Do you know what the story is before you're going to go kill the M F who did that? Who knows, maybe the owner died and had no family and nobody stepped up to take the little dog, so he's in the shelter. Maybe they lost their home and are in a shelter and can't keep him and nobody wanted an old dog. Who knows, but there are worse things, they'd be horrible too I suppose if they put the dog down? Just left him somewhere? UGH!
There's a lady on my facebook who is a big time rescue nut. Breeders should be shot. Yet looking at her pictures, she's pretty much a cat hoarder with 40-50 cats in her duplex at any given time and yeah.... that's so much better.
It's great that they aren't being PTS, but it would be even better if the rescue groups didn't sell the puppies instead of adopting them out. They do very little vetting and sell the puppies sight unseen. They don't do any sort of home checks or vet references, they pretty much just sell them to anyone who is interested. There have been a few cases where the puppies have ended up in a local shelter after it didn't work out. Don't get me wrong, we have a couple of good rescue groups that import dogs, but the ones that only import puppies tend to be just as sketchy as irresponsible breeders are.
