We currently have Mac on Sentinel but yesterday we found a tick on him. My husband wants to use Frontline. The vet said we should switch him to Interceptor and add Frontline. Any suggestions? I know alot of you prefer natural products. My husband is not real keen on that idea thinking they won't work as well. Does Interceptor work as well as Sentinel (i know it doesn't do anything for fleas whereas Sentinel starilizes (sp) them.)? What about Frontline vs. Advantage?

We use the Interceptor/Frontline combo. I can tell you that before we put him on Frontline he got two ticks in the same week. Haven't seen a flea or tick since we started using it. I apply it on an as needed bases, not monthly like they recommend. I've been thinking about trying something natural, but the flea and tick situation here is pretty brutal and the Frontline works. We are also going to halve the does of Interceptor he gets because studies have shown that it is still effective at the lower dose. Hope that helps!

Thanks so much. I appreciate the reply. Mac is only 11 lbs. so a lower dose would be great.

In my experience, Advantix works MUCH better than Frontline. Some vets get kickbacks for pushing one product or another, so don't just assume what your vet suggested is the best thing. Do some research first.

Anyway, as for your question, I have not used Interceptor but I am going to start. Charlie has been on Revolution, which I thought was a parasite preventative, then he got a horrible case of hookworms and whipworms. I researched them ALL and I believe Interceptor is the only one that helps protect against heartworm, roundworm, hookworm and whipworm.

He should be good on a 2.3 mg tablet then. If you want to see the document I got the info from, pm me with your email address. :)

It also depends on where you live also...there have been quite a few people here (cant remember who at the moment) but advantix has worked for them where frontline hasnt and vice versa...I know that here Frontline works great for me

Iverhart max covers all the worms listed plus tapeworms, it's the only one that does.

Yeah, I think it does depend on the area. The fleas and ticks have partial immunity to certain meds in some places. We're both in NC, so I guess that's why it works for us!

I didn't know about the immunity thing. I am in Indiana and just about everyone I know has switched from Frontline to Advantix. I tried Frontline because my vet recommended it and it just didn't work so when I asked her about switching is when she told me that they are "encouraged to recommend" Frontline but she agrees that it doesn't always work as well. Someone had told me that with Frontline the flea or tick has to actually bite the dog to die, but with Advantix they die or are repelled before they get the chance to bite. I have no idea if that's actually true though. Anybody know?

Anyone know why you can buy from PetMeds in Indiana? They are not alot cheaper than our Vet but enough if you buy 6 to 12 months worth. Can you get Interceptor and Frontline or Advantix anywhere other than the Vets office?

I am in Indiana and I get most of my meds from 1800petmeds.com. They check with your vet to make sure it is OK and mail them to you in just a couple days. It is waaaay cheaper than getting them at the vet's offie. They carry Frontline, Advantix, Interceptor, just about anything. You can even get antibiotics and pain medicine from them if your vet has prescribed it.

Thanks Charliesmommy. I was told Petmeds wouldn't ship in Indiana. It didn't make sense to me. I'm glad to hear that information was wrong. I think I'll give it a try.

Sasha has been on Revolution for almost 5 years and she has never had any ticks, fleas, worms, or heartworms. There have been times when we have forgotten to put it on her for a couple of weeks too. I have had her tested especially since we live near a wooded area, and still she's never had ticks or heartworms. Rosco had some hookworms in his stool a few months ago but it was basically because he had outgrown the dosage. We had him on the "medium" dose which is up 75 lbs I think and he was weighing 84! So he wasnt fully covered... oops but its taken care of now :)

if you have cats in the house you cannot use advantix.

interceptor and sentinel are the same thing. sentinel just has an additional ingredient to repel fleas, which interceptor does not. other than that they are exactly the same.

Keep in mind revolution only does the american dog tick, and no other ticks.. So if deer ticks and such are an issue you'd be double dosing using revolution and frontline or advantix since they both do fleas.

Thanks for the info about cats and advantix. We have a 14 year old cat and wouldn't want to do anything to hurt her.
