3 dogs and 2 cats here. Our older cat, who is 12, was brought up with our older dog who is also 12. He's very tolerant of all the dogs including Gunnar who, being a big oaf, will often lay a heavy forearm on him while he sniffs him from head to toe. We also have a young female who was a stray. She is tolerant of the older dog and our pug (the pug is actually scared of her, he'll avoid her if she approaches him) but she's not too fond of Gunnar. Gunnar will rush her just to get her to run so he can chase, and she doesn't like that. If she's up on a table or something, she's more receptive to him and will sniff noses and play with his ears and stuff but at ground level, she'd prefer to run.

Riot has met a few cats in his lifetime yet is drawn to them. Hes completely obsessed with them and will sit there and get clawed at just to touch them! lol

Of course, if they run away, then its a huge game to him now lol

my Friends Boxer JUST recently got a kitten(yes its his lmao) and they snuggle together every night!!

My golden retriever gets along with my cats fine. He was kept seperate from them for a while, then when i moved to an apartment they were thrown together and the cats sat up ontop of the cabinets for a few days but now they will all lay belly up on the floor together. They love eachother, and they all sleep on the couch. The cats sometimes sleep in his crate with him as well. :D

You guys really surprised me. I thought it's pretty hard to get a cat and a dog to live together.

I always had my dog barking at every single cat it saw. And I must have watched too much Tom and Jerry show... :D

i have three dogs and four cats. i don't have any problems, although it took some time and some care to introduce mushroom into the house. he had to be leashed for a couple weeks and we did a lot of work on teaching him to relax and not chase the cats.

it's interesting, because both the bullies will chase/grab/potentially kill cats outside. those cats a) run and b) aren't family.

We've always had a cat and up to 4 dogs at once. All 4 dogs were raised with Panda. Then after he died we adopted a 9 year old Siamese, Buster took the lonmgest to get "safe" with Elliot (about 6 months till I trusted him offleash and enough for me to leave the room) which was odd because he was always the best with Panda.
We've had Elliot for 2 years now and all the dogs know that he is boss lol. Just one loko from him makes them all look the other way.

Mugsy my cat (mentioned in my sig) did not grow up around dogs. At the time he met his first dog he was 7 years old when I was living temporarily with a friend. The dog my friend had was around a cat before so I knew it would not be a problem for the dog.

I then adopted Lola and Mugsy was 14 at that point. I knew Mugsy would be ok but had no idea about Lola. What I did to bring them together was I was sitting on the floor with Lola on one side and Mugsy on the other side of me. I let Mugsy and Lola sniff each other and interact with each other for a few days under my supervision. After I seen that neither was going to hurt each other I let them be together without me supervising.

Lola would lick the top of Mugsy's head and his ears and Mugsy would just lay their loving every minute of it. As you can see by the pic in my sig they were close.

We had Max (dog) and two cats. Max got along with them without the slightest problem. The first cat we got when he was 8 years old and the second we got when he was ten. They all slept together on my bed. I think introducing an adult cat to a dog is more difficult than introducing an adult dog to a cat. Cats are more nervous about new stuff and do not get the socialization that dogs do.

See, they loved each other's company. The oldest cat and the dog were really close, Neko still loves dogs and greets them with a head butt, with Max gone I feel really bad for him.

Our old dog Ngai, was here before our cat was, and she hated cats, we would often find dead cats in our yard. Then, when we found our cat on the side of the road eating rat bones, my dad brought her home, and he as well doesn't like cats. Ngai would chase her, but she was faster, and Ngai wouldn't actually bite her. Then, we found Suzie on the road, and brought her home. She thinks the cat is a ton of fun and will bark at her, open her mouth and [pretend to bite her, usually going for the ears, until she moves, and then its a full out chase.

Suzie is scared of her, she doesn't want to get clawed, so she jumps back and forth.

My parents do. They have to shepherds from the pound. Missy was around 3-4 when they got her. The local stray cat had been hanging around the house, and let himself in. They kept him, of course, he's a really cool cat. He thinks he's a dog. They got another shepherd a couple months or so ago, and she's around 2-3. She's never bothered the cat :)

I have ferrets. I think they are harder for a dog to get along with, because they actually interact with the dogs more. They play rough, sometimes, and the dogs size could accidentally hurt them if they get too wound up. Maddie plays with the ferts better than she plays with dogs LOL. I brought them into the house, and the dogs are all adults. I foster dogs, and a good number of the fosters are good with the ferts as well. I always supervise, supervise, supervise! Just to be safe ;)

Blaze has also been very good natured. raised with lots of different animals. So when I got marley about a year and a bit ago. i fiured I would have no problem. and I dont. Blaze tolerates her and her crazy kitten like antics, of grabbings his long fur, crawling on him, getting in to his food while he is eating, and being a genuine pain to him lol.

Blaze eating a bone, marley going in for a taste lol

I have had cats and dogs together all my life until just this last year. Victor was probably the most interested in the cat...he would love nothing better than a good chase but Eddie was an old pro and knew how to not move a whisker no matter what and eventually Victor learned to leave the cats alone. Mary would foster them like puppies the same way Bronki did. Bronki adored cats and had one of his own.

My boyfriend and I moved in together officially a few months ago, and my cat and his dog were able to meet and co-exist just fine. Maybe we're lucky! :)

We have 4 dogs and 5 cats..all get along well.

Falafel is our newest adopted Persian, I'm pretty certain she's never been around dogs before judging by her initial 'oh dear god what are those?!' look. She still runs if the dogs come running to greet her (I'm looking at you, Grimmy) as our dogs are used to cats who just stand there, but she's getting much, much better. She no longer has the 'ahhh' look and just stays on high ground when they're playing. (our other cats just walk right through the middle of the goofy dog play)

Anyone owns 2 of them and they are living in harmony together?

I was told that they must be brought together since birth.

Anyone?
I don't think so, but it depends on the dog. We just got a cat maybe 2 weeks ago and we've never had one around 1 of our dogs before. Everyone is getting along fine now, but kitty beat up my dog for being too nosey a few times.

Some dogs and cats are fine together introduced at later times in their lives, others are not. We have had multiple adopted dogs, dogs from breeders and foster dogs, as well as cats. We introduced Alaska, Georgia and Kenai to our Maine Coone cat, Jenna, when they were puppies. They were scared of her at first, and that actually helped the relationship between cat and puppy; they grew and as the dog got bigger than the cat, they formed a relationship not just revolving around puppy-terrified-of-kitty. Now, we have also introduced adopted dogs of older ages to cats in the home, and you need to be careful when doing so. A leash is the best option, maybe a spray bottle if the cat decides to be the aggresive one. Sometimes they just click, sometimes they aren't even interested in eachother, sometimes all hell breaks loose, it really depends on the dog and the cat. Sometimes even when they do start out with tension, or more, it is possible to train or rehabilitate it out of the dog so they can at least live in harmony.

Samwise (Border Collie x Labrador) was introduced to the cat at 5 months old, I believe, and he was just terrified of her and pissed everywhere when he saw her. Buddy (brindle APBT) was introduced to the cat at 2 years old, and he woofed a little, and then left her alone, but he still chased her every once and a while; never harmed her. Curve (black and white APBT) was introduced to the cat at 2 years old, they seemed fine at first; a little tension... and when we accidently left the laundry room door open where the cat sleeps, Curve went in there and attacked her. We couldn't get Curve's jaws off Jenna, but finally we did, and Jenna ended up urinating all over herself, and getting a broken leg, and hiding for days. We attempted to train Curve and Jenna to live in harmony, but it just wasn't happening, but since Curve was a foster dog, she found a forever home soon anyway, and Jenna soon healed, with a little extra beef towards any dog that came into the home.

So, be cautious with any dog or cat, any breed or age. It can happen perfectly, or not.
