Sorry, but they're really, really, really stupid. They're good with kids though and they're affectionate. But if you want something even remotely capable of thinking for itself, don't get one. A friend of mine breeds them. Her bitch has been known to walk headfirst into a glass door, repeatedly.

You know what? If your friend breeds stupid bull terriers, then she must be a byb! Bull terriers are NOT supposed to be stupid. If you get one from a RESPONSIBLE breeder, you wont find a bull terrier who is stupid. They are supposed to have a sense of humor, but they are not supposed to be stupid. I dont think you should tell someone that a certain breed is stupid just because your friend is a byb. Just read the breed standard. Bull terriers are goofy and just as smart as any other breeds.

I don't actually believe i was talking to you rottiegirl. However, as you have decided to make an unjustified attack on my friend i'll lower myself to your level. Have you ever owned a bully? Breed standards written in books are never one hundred percent accurate. Her bitch wasn't bred by her, she came from a breeder in VIC. NOT a byb. I didn't say they weren't good dogs, only that if you want something smart, and adaptable, don't get one. I said they're affectionate and good with kids. Another poster said they're fun loving, which is also true.
My friends dogs aren't the only ones i've seen. None of them have been particularly bright.
Accusing people of being bybs without knowing who they are is fairly stupid. Perhaps you'd make a good bully owner, rottiegirl? They say a dog should match its owner's personalilty.

i can tell you what i know of bully breeds in general, keep in mind the majority of my experience with the bullies is with staffies, but ive met a few bull terriers...
they are in absolutly NO way shape or form STUPID...there silly yes but NOT stupid (ANY dog repeatedly walking into any object should be checked for mental problems repetative strange behaviours like that are usually a sighn of a nerlogical problem or boredom! eitherway that female shouldnt be bred untill its figured out!)
there the clowns of the dog world...most people think clowns are stupid when infact there the most advanced performers of any circus often doing things that the other acts WONT do as well as all the tings they CAN do...so think of the bullies as the clowns. constantly doing things that seem "silly" to amuse you.
they can be very stuborn and need a firm but kind hand to train and constantly need "refreshing", the nothing in life is free method of training is GREAT for ANY bully breed. and watch for dominance issues. early socilization with people and other dogs is a MUST!
MOST bullies are wonderful with kids (im not familiar at all with amstaffs and pretty unfamiliar with pitties, but all the bullies of other breeds ive met are great with kids)
ive had the priledge of knowing 3 bull terriers very well andmeeting about 300 total...and none of those dogs were "stupid" they were sweet and very silly dogs, always making their people laugh...one owner even told me, of all the breeds hes never had one who tries so hard to make him laugh as his bullterrier...but saying bulls are stupid is ridiculous, ive never known a stupid dog to learnt to open cupborads and the fridge to help themselves to snaks, this one could do more tricks than a performing monkey, was sweet and frinedly even with dogs and its own pet rat (who traveled round all the time with the bull terrier riding on its back or in a backpack for dogs) he aparently taught himself most of the tricks he performed, was atherapy dog in a childrens hospital and could open the sliding glass window, get in draws and put his own sweater on. on that doggy inteligent test you can find around, this bull terrier schored in top ranks, had his canine good citizen award and was a seizure alert dog for his masters wife (seizure alret dogs cannot be trained to alert!)
in NO way was he STUPID! he was a silly one though often rolling over with his tonge out lolling to one side for belly rubs, or tugging you pant leg when you wernt paying attention, and seeing him pick up his ball take it to the top of the stairs and roll it down when noone woudl play fetch with him.
i take pride in the fact ive met MANY stupid people but not one STUPID dog...and the bully breeds eyes scream inteligence and kindness...

ignor the first comment, seems like they were trying to start issues....

there are pros and cons to this breed:
they are loving and fun loving
good with kids
usually good dogs
beautifull
inteligent

can be stubborn and difficult to train in the beginning (refresher courses a must)
some have dominance and dog agression issues (socilize socilize socilize)
watch for back yard breeders...ive seen a few backyard bred bulls with advanced neurological problems often in the forms of repetative behaviours like walking into walls, agression to paws and tail, or circle walking...ect) a good breeder is an absolute MUST with a breed lik this to ensure sound body temperment AND mind.
and avoid poeple llike the first comment maker up there...lol.

hope this helps.

my biggest peice of advice would be to contact breeders, attend meets go to shows and see them in action.

I love the miniature ones... My neighbor a couple of houses down owns a [regular] white one. They are renowned for its courage, strength, and intelligence. Personality wise the word dorky comes to mind :p, but in a good way of course. "Frank" is very dorky and goofy when playful, but can be serious and determined at appropriate times.

Well, if you havent noticed, there is a little "quote" button on all posts. What do you think its for?

You just said that your friend breeds bull terriers and they are stupid. If anyone breeds stupid dogs, then they arent very responsible. You are supposed to breed as close to the breed standard as possible, and it sounds like your friend is way off. I suggest you go visit bull terriers from RESPONSIBLE breeders.

Now you are saying I am stupid? I dont think so. If you ask anyone on this forum if it is correct to label any breed to be stupid, they will stongly disagree with you. No breed is supposed to be stupid, period.

Now lets be honest here. Your ignorance by labeling breeds, is the reason why we are dealing with bsl today. Do not label a breed just because you met a few that you thought were stupid. Chances are, they came from bybs. Or they have a neurological problem.

Thank you all at least those who a said that bull terriers are smart, because they are. What I've read so far is that they are very intelligent dogs, and very humouras and good natured. So I take it that no one on this forum has one?? If so please post pictures, and tell me more.

I dont mean to clog up a thread by arguing with someone, but I had to defend the breed. They are not stupid. They have a wonderful sense of humor.

I have never owned one, but I have met many. They are the sweetest things. Here are some beautiful pics that I found when I was researching the breed. I love the white ones...

It may not be that they are stupid more that they have a high pain tolerance. My dog isn't a bull terrier, he's a pit mix which is cousin to bull terriers, but he runs into walls, furniture, and anything that is solid bounces off then keeps right on trucking. And yes... he has run into a glass door before... bounced off and kept right on going... as usual.

It's not that he's stupid -- he's actually rather bright -- his pain tolerance just makes such things inconsequential to him. ;)

And that high pain tolerance is a trademark of all the bully breeds - american staffordshire terriers, staffordshire terriers, american pit bulls, bull terriers, miniature bull terriers, and all the mixes there of. They have an incredibly high pain tolerance, are fairly bright (not as bright as a poodle but they've definately got brains working in their heads), but are very, very stubborn. That stubborness is sometimes hard to work with, but once you figure your dog out you can use it to your advantage.

Personally I am thinking of getting a (spayed) female dog in the future as a companion to my male dog. Miniature Bull Terriers is a breed I am looking at as a possible match, but unlike Rottiegirl I am partial to the colored ones. They look so goofy and I think they'd be a good match for Mojo. :)

A lot of my friends have Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and when my 13 yr old dog passed away peacefully, my closest friend's Staff acciedently got pregnant by a mongrel hence now I have a slightly larger version of a brindle Staff, she is only 14 weeks and she will obey, sit, paw, lie down, come, stay, in but we are still working on NO. She is deffinately not stupid and she is incredibally loyal to me already. She also gets on great with my 4 cats, the 8 kittens (who are not staying), and the cockatiel. at 12 weeks we went to the woods, she had no lead on and didn't run off once. I think bull terrier are good solid hardy dogs with lots of love to give

I love the bullies!

I was absolutely thrilled to see Rufus take Westminster- finally some *good* publicity for a wonderful breed.

In regards to them beings "stupid" nothing could be further from the truth. It's been my experience that people who make blanket statements about certain breeds temperaments just don't *understand* the dogs, and never really want to anyway. I've heard the same sort of tripe about Shibas. Shibas aren't stupid- they're manipulative. It takes a smart *owner* to realize that. ;)

Not every breed has or needs the obedience or bidability of a Golden. Remember- these guys are tough, bouncy, fun-loving terriers. They're *going* to push your buttons, and they're *going* to run into walls and bounce right off of them because as mojozen pointed out, they see such things as inconsequential. All in all, a very fun breed!

I would love to add a white bull terrier to my family one day.

I was thrilled when Rufus won too, Tempura (love your clever name, by the way - I'm partial to puns :D )

I've always said that if I ever have another small dog I want a Bull Terrier.
