I saw the cartoon versions as a kid and I loved them. I'm a Christian and I didn't think there was anything religious about it at all either. (I haven't seen the movie yet.) But I have heard that Aslan is supposed to represent Christ. Anybody else know the Christian themes in it? I know C.S. Lewis was a Christian and I've read most of his non-fiction books - but I think Narnia scared me when I was a kid!
It is actually what's called an alagory (geeze hope I spelled that right
) and is supposed to have direct parallels to the bible. Ex. Aslan is God/ Jesus, white witch is satan, ect. There are religious overtones throughout all the books. (Sons of Adam and Daughters of Eve for one) Esp. in the last battle where the ape and ass are the anti-christ who decieve all of the animals who haven't seen aslan ever so don't know what to look for in him. Lucy is supposed to represent Mary who sat at Jesus's feet, and later saw him when he rose from the dead and listened to him and just wholeheartedly believed no matter what that Jesus was good and ,(I think) Edmund plays Judas when he betrays his family and Aslan by going to the white witch with their whereabouts. That's the basic gist anywho. I LOVED the movie and felt I could see it over and over and over. I loved the cartoon version as a little kid too. The books, religious overtones or not, are phenomenal and C.S. Lewis was a genius. Another aside, he was good friends with J.R.R. Tolkien which is why if you read their books they have similar tones, and the maps in the books look similar.
