I heard the other day at Riots Conformation class..

that to stop your dog from eating its own poop or other dogs poop is to add sliced/shredded pineapple onto their food.

Apparently it worked wonders for this lady that breeds cocker spaniels!

Anyone else heard of this?

I haven't heard of using the pineapple before, but I have heard of using spinach to increase the iron content and give it a sort of metallic-y taste most dogs find unpleasant.

Pineapple is very acidic though, so it might give it a 'tang' they dogs dont' like? I have no idea, really.

Yes! My uncle does that with his Irish Setters because a couple of them had that bad habit. It does work because his stopped doing it after he added it to their diet. I think he used natural Pineapple juice mixed in the food though instead.

I believe the purpose is that the pineapple contains enzymes that help the dog completely digest his food the first time around.....just as we use papaya tablets to aid in digestion.

However, there are some darned dogs that just like the taste of poop, and it has nothing to do with how well they are digesting their food!!! Yuck!

It's because pineapples are very sweet but once digested they produce an enzyme that apparently makes the poop taste sour.
