I realize this post is 9 years old but others may benefit.
Most allergies are food or vaccination related.
If a veterinarian/grocery brand kibble is being fed, it most likely contains garbage ingredients such as grains, corn, soy, by-products and is full of fillers that can be dangerous at best and poisonous at worst.
Raw is best. Can be home made or bought frozen/freeze-dried.
Next is wet food then kibble, grain-free and low starch.

Prednisone is a nasty steroid and in most of the cases I've seen it's over- prescribed and misused. Many vets use it to blanket almost everything.
It affects the immune system and often that's when the big problems start.

Steroids like these treat the symptoms, not the disease.
Symptoms often go away but the real problem hasn't been addressed... the allergen is still there.

I'd be curious what was being fed...

Here's my Siberian... this is what a raw meat diet does after the terrible shape he was in when we found each other. His allergies were so bad his paws were raw and bleeding:

I'd be curious to see where you got this information. I've had many discussions with several different vet dermatologists (including 2 at different universities) and they've told me that environmental allergy is much more common than food or vaccine allergies. Vaccines kinda don't even make sense since most dogs get them every 3 years nowadays.

Environmental allergies are allergies to things in the environment like pollen, dust, trees, grass, etc.

My boxer mix has a grass allergy and has to take meds from spring till fall. Did the vet say what kind of allergy your pup has? There are specialist that can desensitize dogs to some allergies. Ask your vet about it.
