my 12 yr old female springer has a nail that has grown a double nail over the normal nail. The vet said it was most likely caused by a trauma to the nailbed at some point, although we have no idea when, or how, it could have happened.
Anyhow, it's impossible to clip it because it's so thick so I can only dremel it. Dremeling is hard because it's difficult to see the quick very well and I don't want to go too far as both nails have a quick! Like trimming one nail with a quick isn't enough to worry about
Has anyone ever had their dog develope this before? I'm asking because today I noticed that it seems like the top scaley nail is becoming infected, or maybe it's eroding, around the area it attached to the toe itself. It appears to have some dried blood and a "mushiness" to it in that area of the nail. Of course I will get her to the vet on Monday if they are open, if not then she will definitely go on Tuesday to get it looked at again. In the meantime I"m soaking it in some betadine solution and water and coating it with neosporin. She isn't limping on it, and isn't favoring it in any way. I just dont' like the way it's looking.
We call it her "Franken-nail"
Here are some pics of it. I got some where you can compare the size of it with her other nails, and also with my fingers. It's very thick.
