I have a 6 year old shih tzu and a 5month old shih tzu maltese cross. Both dogs are kenneled when we are gone and also at night. The problem is sometimes we may be gone over 4 hours and have no one to let them out. I am wondering if anyone has any ideas about letting them run? I was thinking I could put them in a room in the basement where they had acess to food and water. Is there such as thing as a potty area? What do others do when gone a period of time?? If they potty on the cement floor will they then think its ok to potty anywhere in the house? If this is the wrong forum for this ? Please lead me in the right direction. Thanks so much for any input.

you've come to the right place but I can only help a little. The six year old should be able to hold his bladder for four hours easy and the 5 month should be almost there. You should not let them pee anywhere in the house, it's too confusing in my opinion. I never crated Max but if I got a dog today I definitely would. I'm not sure how long the people here recommend crating a dog. Can you get a trusted neighbor to bring the dog outside to go to the bathroom or even take them on a walk? The older dog would be fine with free run of the house most likely but the puppy should be confined. hope some one else can be of more help.
