any Harlequin Dane owners?

There is one up at the SPCA in my town Interesting story on him actually

He was in the pet section of the paper because when hubby told me I could have a dog thats what I originally wanted (dont tell my bernard lol) and I called the woman and she said that she wanted 1000$ for him, but he had no papers and a bunch of other stuff. Well I told her no thank you. The place that I had called turns out to be a horrible place, where she neglected her animals....anyway, a family did adopt him(i should add he was there because his other family dumped him off there ) but turns out the woman who adopted him was allergic...so up to the SPCA he went...and now hes there, waiting for me to come and give him a good home


For all you H. Dane owners...what are your dogs like? I have done a lot of reading but it doesnt copare with first hand knowledge. I have a 1 year old un-altered male Saint..but he gets along with anything and everything...so I hope the dane likes him. Of course we will foster him if we plan to adopt him to make sure he is the right dog for us.

Do a lot of H. Danes have blue eyes? Is that something to be worried about...hes got blue eyes.



Arg..we are going up there tomorrow ...I hope hope hope hubby lets me adopt him...and give him the good life he needs with lots of hugs and kisses and love and he will never be dumped off or given away again!!

We have a member named Cheza who has a harlequin Dane with a blue and a green eye. Cheza will probably show up soon though and tell you about her dog.

I think it's great that you are gonna get him from the shelter (I never trust newspaper ads). Is the only reason you are worried about blue eyes is that he might be blind? It's possible but I'd be more worried about deafness. I have personally always wanted a deaf dog because many people think they are untrainable, the truth is they can be trained like any other dog except with hand signals. If I were you I'd go to the shelter and spend some time with the dog and see if you can tell if he has hearing loss or blindness. See if there staff vet would test him for it. Ihope you get him, and show lots of pics!

Many harle danes have blue eyes. Some with visual impairment, some without.
Do you know how his hearing is? If his hearing is okay, chances are his vision is too.

Some people say danes are danes regardless of color, and then some believe that each color has a different personality.

In my experience, my harles (both boys) were a little more "edgy" than my other danes, a little more high strung, and a little more goofy. Both boys were very dominant and had a couple issues we had to work hard on. Now, that could be TOTALLY coincidental - the harle adults I took in as rescues were no different than any other color. My harle boys could have just been that way due to their lineage.

Some male danes can be very intolerate of other male dogs. I am a tad concerned about you introducing a male (neutered? Recently neutered?) to an un-altered male...What state are you in? If it is a state where I know someone involved with danes, I could possibly find someone with dane experience to assist you in evaluating the dog and (if you decide to adopt him), introducing him to your saint on neutral ground to see how they do.

We had one a month or so ago at our shelter. He was absolutly lovely, and one of the largest I have ever seen! Every bit of 170 lbs, although he could have used a diet. He was so large that I led him about by just my hand on his collar, because his neck was the perfect height (I'm 5'6). Just an all around baby doll.
Maxy- I've got a deaf cattle dog for you! She is a neat dog, but boy could she use some training! :lol-sign:

I'm not sure of his hearing or sight...but I'll see when I go up there today I guess.

He was recently neutered (althought Im not sure when) so if there was any problems, it would be on his end. My male, althought in-tact, is friendly with any dog/cat regardless of gender or if they are fixed. But hopefully they will get along.

I hope my hubby gets hooked!! He told me no more dogs (he says it like we have 20) but I know once he sees the big sad eyes on the dog he will re-consider...after all he told me he was never going to go to the SPCA with me...and look where we are going!!

Maxy- I've got a deaf cattle dog for you! She is a neat dog, but boy could she use some training!

Yay!! if she likes cats I'll come pic her up! I am currently dog less and am depressed since i have no dog be careful what you say or I may actually come steal him LOL. I seriously would love a deaf dog though, people always are like why would you want a deaf dog when you get a hearing one, but i'd rather a deaf dog *shrugs*. I'D love a pic of her

hey everyone


well i went up the the SPCA and had a look at him...and he is HUGE lol I have a saint, so I thought my dog was big but nooooooo this one towers my dog!!

Looks like we cant get him after all, he is not okay with other male dogs

keep looking on petfinder for some danes, there's a lot of them in rescues. i think people get them without realizing the size of them.

She has a lot of ticking all over her body and is one of the prettiest colors I have ever seen. She is small, about 40 lbs. She barks a lot! But then, she can't tell how irritating she is.

I have a harl... she's very much puppy still, but we've never noticed any edginess with her or anything. She's just a big pile of love.

As far as hearing and vision goes, eyes/ears with no pigment on them tend to work less/fail totally as opposed to eyes/ears with pigment. While it's generally true that if one functions in some form, the other will as well, it's also very common to have a deaf dane that can see, or a blind dane that can hear. There are varying degrees of sight/hearing loss in poorly marked harlequins.
