I am new to the puppy world and thought that Sciene Diet was a better dry food than those sold at the Grocery Store. After reading on the forum, I quickly discovered that it wasn't and wanted to get my 11 week old Papillion a high quality dry food. While at the local animal supply warehouse (they are the only store around that sells hard to find food) I came across the Oven Baked Tradition. There was a vendor there and he explained the food and the cooking process to me and I took home a 10 pound bag to try. We are currently gradually switching him over this week.

Has anyone had any experience with this food? Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I Noticed that food has salt listed pretty high in the ingredient list and lots of grains. You should look at ingredients as listed because it is by weight. I would try Canidae on your Papillion. It has been around a long time and is highly rated by Whole Dog Journal. I have had very good luck with this food for years.

In any case I bet it's better than Science Diet. :)

Next time you're at the store, look for brands like Timberwolf Organics, California Natural, Innova, and Wellness. I bet you'll find at least one of them!

They do have Wellness. I was told that Oven Baked used to be Wellness, but they changed the cooking process.

Chicken, ground oats, ground whole barley, brown rice protein, ground brown rice, fish meal, chicken fat (naturally preserved), pearled barley, ground whole rye, ground whole flaxseed, inulin, yucca schidigera, salt, monosodium phosphate, potassium chloride, garlic, taurine, vitamin E, choline chloride, beta-carotene, chondroitin sulphate, glucosamine hydrochloride, spinach, kelp, broccoli, sweet potato, apples, blueberries, pears, bananas, vitamin A acetate, vitamin D3 supplement, vitamin B12 supplement, ferrous sulphate, zinc oxide, niacin supplement, calcium pantothenate, copper sulphate, manganous oxide, riboflavin supplement, thiamine hydrochloride, calcium iodate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, folic acid, sodium selenite, natural flavor.

Wheres the meat? Very grain heavy food :yikes:

Salt is higher than the fuits and vegetables listed...

Kelp is higher than most fruits & veggies....

Why monosodium phosphate?

I feed Duke Oven Baked and have seen no change in his energy, weight or coat condition vs when he used to eat fromm and wellness, so in my books its ok. Also if you compare the ingredients in Oven Baked and Wellness there almost word for word.

Enlighten me I've never heard of monosodium phosphate and as such am ignorant to your concern about its use in the food.

Here are the ingredients to the Wellness Super5Mix Chicken:

Deboned Chicken, Chicken Meal, Oatmeal, Ground Barley, Ground Brown Rice, Tomato Pomace, Rye Flour, Canola Oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a natural source of vitamin E), Tomatoes (natural source of Lycopene), Rice Bran (from brown rice), Whitefish, Natural Chicken Flavor, Carrots, Spinach, Sweet Potatoes, Apples, Blueberries, Flaxseed, Ground Millet, Dicalcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Potassium Chloride

As you can see, they are wayyyyy different foods. The Wellness has chicken meal as an ingredient, meaning that chicken is for sure on the top of that ingredient list.

Personally I wouldn't feed either food... they don't fit what I look for in a food. The Oven Baked IS way too grain heavy, though... once the water is taken out of that chicken, it's going to go behind all of the grain on the ingredients list.

Looking at the ingreds, I wouldn't feed Oven Baked. A few of my dogs didn't do all that great on wellness either.

Just because your dog looks and seems fine, doesn't mean things are great. I have friends who eat junk all the time (pop, chips, Mcdonalds) and they are slim, healthy looking with shiny hair and lots of energy. Doesn't mean it won't catch up with them eventually.

I am confused (it's easy to do though). So Wellness would be a better food than the OB? There is a limited selection here so I have to go with what is available.
