My husband and I are both in love with the breed but neither of us have ever owned a dobe. We are hoping to one day include one in our family (probably not for a couple years- but I am the type to research throughly so I'm starting early!). Aside from the fact that we both find them absolutly STUNNING physically, we also like that they are a very loval, loving and family oriented dogs(or so we have heard) I was hoping that someone on this forum could share some insight about the breed. In order to fit in with our family the dog would need to get along well with other dogs (large and small) as well as kids (which we hope to have one day) and different types of animals (if I am lucky enough to get the farm that I want :) ) I am hoping that by posting here I can gain some insight and hopefully hear some stories about the dobes in your lives! Thanks!

They are the best! Just go to a good breeder, leave the pup for twelve weeks and you'll at least have a great start :) Here is a dobe forum you will get anything answered http://www.network54.com/Forum/11341
They are great dogs but not for everyone. I've met some that were nutty from bad breeding so the only thing I can stress is good breeder. If you have any more specific questions just ask!

It always recomended only one male dog in the house with the dobes. My boy gets along with everyone including the farm animals but he grew up around it and was very well socialized with it all early on. My doe boy is the only one of my dogs that loves kids. He can't get ebough of them. I don't know if its because his breeder had a couple or if its cause I took him to the school when he was little.good luck!

I used to breed Dobermans. They are still one of my favorite breeds in the world.Make sure to find a good breeder and stay away from the so called warlocks,There is a breed standard for a reason. My Dobermans were amazing with children and most animals except small rodents.Good luck in your search and research those breeders.

Also run from anyone with whites. I've seen a ton of people claiming some wild stuff with them lately  http://www.dpca.org/albinoinfo1.html

Also ask about bloat. I never did but thank god it didn't run in his family. The more I ask people about it I seem to see a connection in genetics more than anything else.

I've also heard people saying its ok if the pup growls at you. Its not. the parents should be accepting of you there. Just remembr you want the parents to be acting how you would want your dog to.

Yeah The RARE whites same as Boxers.Stay away from them. There is a wonderful Breeder by me who I can recommend with flying colors for when you are ready. His dogs are absolutly beautiful, with amazing temperments too.But yes stay away from anyone with whites in their lines or people breeding for oversize puppies.

Cheat, and get a Manchester Terrier, rofl. Everything ya love about Dobes in a more conveniently sized package! Same love of comfort, warped sense of humor, ability to be spoiled rotten, etc.!!!!!

Not The Same

Yup That is true Manchesters.I fell in love with the first mini me Doberman-Manchester I met.I like them too.
The Miniature Pinscher and Manchester are two different breeds. In my opinion the Manchester is a much more beautiful dog.......check out the heads on the Min Pins as compared to Manchesters.....the Min Pin back skull is square and blocky. Too much stop between the muzzle and backskull. Manchesters have a wedge shaped head, with parrell planes.....just like Dobes. Also Manchesters are sweeter and more like velcro!!!! Min Pins are bristley, but not like velcro, roflmbo.

Good correction! Also the Manchester's played a part in creating the modern dobe, where as although the name suggests differently, the Miniature Pinscher is no relation.

To the original Poster, I realize that I'm coming in a month after you posted, I just caught this thread and thought I'd chime it! Dobermans are a wonderful breed. But not a dog for everyone. They have energy, and a powerful drive to please their owner and be "attached at the hip" to their master. Defintely in your dobe info searches, don't get sucked into the "white" dobe fad. If anything, do your research and be a voice for the breed to educate people as to the error of the breeding of albino dobermans and continuing the abomination that BYB are doing to the breed by promoting such dogs.

Sorry don't mean to get into a albino discussion with you! Good Luck! Let us know what you decide on! :)

I never said a min pin is related to the Doberman in fact minpins are alot older than Dobes.I used to Breed Dobes so I do know the differance. The min Pin is a Ratter.Doberman is a Working breed.Manchesters wasnt correcting me she misunderstood what I was saying.I wasnt talking about my min pin I was talking about a Manchester I met in Toronto.
