Anyone here own a bernese mountain dog?

I've heard they have shorter life spans 6-9 years. My husband really likes them and they are beginning to grow on me also. Just curious if anyone has
1st hand knowledge of them.

I know a few. Most of the seem to be wonderful, easy going, loving dogs. WE looked into them too. The short life , healthprobs things is the biggest downfall-- very unfortunate. Where I live they are also very expensive.

Seven years.

That's what most Berner owners have with their dogs. Find cancer the sixth year, dead soon after turning seven. It's now so common and such a shame. Chemo or no, the dogs die. Look extremely closely before getting a Berner. They're wonderful dogs if you can stand the heartbreak, and not many can.

in general giant breeds like masitfs and bernese mountain dogs and st. bernards ect are known for their shorter lifespans, however just because the average is 7 years doesnt mean your berner will only have that.

however it DOES make it the absoloute mostofimportance to find a breeder with long lived healthy lines who do all the health checks and knows their dogs extreemly well, knowing the age of death of not only 2 generations but even further back, genetic problems, cancers ect.
the average lifespan for a dan is 701o yrs, i had a dane who was 13 when he passed, remember that average includeds the badly bred, puppymill pups, backyard bred dogs, and dogs that might not have been spay/neutered (which of course increasesrisk of reproductive cancers)

they are a WONDERFULL breed, they love their family and can be protective (especially of their kids) and they love to work, ive yet to meet a berner that doesnt excell at saluking and carting. like all heavy coated breeds most dont enjoy hot weather but LOVE the snow. most berners ive ever met also love to swim. they shed their coatlike crazy and are clumsy pups but supercute.

socilization and at the least basic obedience is a must.

these are BIG strong dogs, so manners are a very important thing to train in from a young age.

Yup, we have a berner. I think they are GREAT dogs. Ours is so easy-going now and is very eager to learn, and work (and boy can she work). There are a lot of things you have to look out for with berners though. Hip/elbow dysplasia, blindness, cancer, I forgot the name of the disorder but it's a bleeding disorder Von something (I really forgot the name...sorry). Check the bernese mountain dog club of america (I can give you the website if you want it). They have breed stewards and you can locate one close to you that could help you find a breeder, or some breed them themselves.

I haven't had our berner for very long but I know PFC1 also has a berner and theirs is a couple years old. I lover our berner though she's definetely a velcro dog, she just has to touch and feel and know you are with her. She will sit on your foot, get under foot when you are walking, when we do a sit, or down command she must end the command right on your foot. They live very much a "we" existence and if they could talk would always ask "well what are WE going to do today?"

i have 2 bernese puppies
we had another before but she sadly died in the summer at just 5 years old =[
she had a lot of things wrong with her but this was because of the breeder we think

the two puppies are lovely and i believe they are the best dog type =]
theres a picture of them both in my post in introductions

the breeders these two puppies are from have most their dogs till their 12 and are working on campaings to lenghten the breeds lifespan

most live till 9 or 10

I have one. Her name is Sascha and she is now six years old. She is very healthy at the moment except for some lumps and bumps which have been confirmed to be lypomas (little harmless fat lumps under the skin)

If purchased from a very good breeder they can live longer than 5-7 years. The other dogs from the breeder we got her from had dogs that lived to be up to 10. :)
