Oh! I've got one! This is Sawyer. (please ignore the pink carpet; I'm in the middle of redecorating)

And (one of) the reasons Australian Shepherds are named as such is basically as follows. The base stock came from the herding dogs of the Basque region in Europe and went to Australia with the sheep that were exported. From there, the ancestors of the modern Aussie followed settlers to America and to the American West. Years passed, modifications were made and cemented and eventually we ended up with the type that is recognized under the ASCA/AKC/USASA. Anyway, they got the tag "Aussie" because that was where people knew the base breeding stock came from.

There are other theories/versions, but that's essentially it.

Thanks! He's about a year and half; not really sure because he's a rescue from ARPH. I still can't get over how someone could have let this fantastic dog go! He and his sister (who's a black tri) were found wandering around a Subway parking lot down south of me. I've had him for about 2 months and he's the best and smartest dog I've ever had. Just goes to show that some of the best dogs don't come directly from fancy breeders.
