Actually, I have heard this before....about contaminants...droplets coming into contact with tooth brushes and things near by. It is really gross. And when we hang our purses on the back of public restroom doors or set them down, do you know how much e-coli is probably on our purses? It is enough to choose the side of the road, isn't it. I like that: "Opt to drop." LOL.

I imagine things are a lot more hygienic than they were 20, 30 or 100 years ago and the human population is still alive and kicking... despite not closing the toilet seat when flushing!

I'll never forget the sign I read once in a public restroom....I think it was in a bar or restaurant or something. It read: If you sprinkle when you tinkle, please be a sweetie and wipe the seatie. LOL. I'm often tempted to put it in my guest bath when I have guys here, like my son, his friends or his dad. I can't stand it that men stand when they pee. lol. Of course, pee isn't so germy until it sits for a long time. It's actually almost sterile when it first comes out.

20/20 I think it was did a study on this years ago. After their segment aired, there were lots of studies coming out that even if you put the seat lid down before you flush, when you lift the seat lid, the bacteria travel out at that point anyway...

I hate hate HATE public restrooms, but unfortunately I can't get away with not using them. I pee.... A LOT!!!!! And when I have to go it becomes an urgent matter pretty quickly and if I try to hold it I end up hurting really bad. I hate it because I'm seriously grossed out of public restrooms... And those sensors that automatic flush always flush when I'm still sitting down doing my business. That grosses me out even more.

This.

Also as gross as it is you NEED to give your immune system something to do. Lots of studies have shown that some of our immune issues like allegies and the like are prevalent in the western world because we are so clean. Our immune systems don't develop because they never get a real work out (particularly when young)

Its a bit of a catch 22 you don't want to get sick, but you will make yourself weak by not exposing your immune system to a wide variety of germs.

even though in general, the levels are microscopic, it's the idea of it that bothers me personally. so i've made it a rule that everyone is to flush the toilet with the lid down. this means i never fall in on a sleepy walk to the bathroom, too :p

Ugh.. this thread made me sick to my stomach (bleh). I don't mind using public restrooms as long as they are clean. I'd rather relieve myself than walk around in pain all day.
