I have a 5 month old toy poodle and would like to purchase another to keep Calbee company. When should i look into getting another puppy?

Calbee will be neutered next month, so i am wondering if i should get a female or male?

I am thinking of getting another poodle. Is it okay to get another male or should i get a female?

Thanks for the feedback.

Instead of purchasing, have you thought about adopting a dog? There are many great dogs that need a home.

I would get the opposite sex, and wait until Colbee is properly trained (meaning housetrained at least, plus basic obedience like sit, stay, wait etc). It just makes it so much easier for the second one, and training both at once is really hard IMO.

If it were me, I'd wait until Calbee was a year old before I got another puppy. That way I would have most of the basic training out of the way and he would be starting to come out of that puppy stage (well...maybe not completely but you know what I mean...he'll be starting to mature a bit). That way when I did get the new pup I wouldn't be taking time away from him or his training at such a critical age.
Oh and I'd go for the opposite sex as well.

Adopting from a shelter or poodle rescue is a great idea as well. :)

Having a trained dog is SOO much easier to bring a young puppy home to.

That way the puppy will learn from the other, trained dog as well and training for the pup will go MUCh smoother.

Riot learned a LOT of bad habits from the Shelties b/c they were here first yet still puppies when Riot arrived. I tried to keep him away from them for long periods of time..

I found out that his "play aggresion" is built up FROM the Shelties now so he will not be allowed to play with them unless hes tethered to a long line so I have full control over him. Jada has taught him to be "growly" when playing b/c shes a snotty little ....*clears throat* anyways..

Getting a young puppy with a young puppy is asking for behavioural problems.

I would also suggest getting a female for your male - even if hes going to be fixed. Make SURE you fix your female as well though!

If you aren't planning on showing or anything like that, I'd definately check out shelties first b/c looking for a GOOD breeder as well :)

i think the opposite sex would be best.. i have always had a male and a female, they seem to function together so well..or two females will work too. I have to plug rescue, for there are so many dogs like what you are interested in out there that need a home just like yours.www.Petfinder.com is a great place to look.

I purchased Bella when Elle turned 1, they are both female toy poodles.

Elle was 100% trained, when we got Bella and Bella's house training went so much faster then Elle's.

The trainer we talked to said it was okay for us to get two females and although there has been a little jealousy and a few tiffs overall everything has gone fine.

I think I would wait a little bit longer before you get another one and make sure Calbee is 100% trained.

Good Luck

I have been in the same boat. Trust me when I say wait :) At 5 months you hit the happy puppy stage and everything seems to be going great, then you hit the stubborn teenage phase.... I am waiting as well to see if I want to bring another dog into our lives and charlie is over 10 months now. No harm in waiting :)
