We live in an area that isn't very dog friendly. The guy that owns our strip of townhomes normally doesn't allow dogs, but he made an exception because of us. It was a mistake to do it that way, but we are moving to a dog friendly area now. Anyway, our neighbors are never friendly to us because they hate dogs. I think the Zoey situation was the straw that really broke the camels back though, because ever since then, they will not even look at us.

I will say that I do make an effort to have the dogs pee in the city owned strip between the sidewalk and the street and if someone's obviously got a yard they are completely anal about (rare) we steer very clear.

But you know, we've gotten entirely TOO prissy about too many things . . .

Buster's not allowed to mark on leash, unless its obvious he's not marking and actually needs to pee. I hate standing there with my dog peeing on soemthing holding the end of the leash. He's good though, if i just keep walking, he hates walking behind me so he'll stop sniffing to catch up.

But he usually gets some time off leash in every walk, and he's allowed to pee on anything off leash (within reason)

1.not only does it smell
2.but if one of my dogs are out there they get peed on
3. i dont know if your dog is healthy
4. i esp. hate when unneutered dogs pee because it smells worse then my neutered dog i dont think its fair i have to wash my fence and yard
because people cant control there dog
when i walk my guys they know its not there grass they dont step on it and its not there fences
they hold it in til we get till the park etc ....
also people with there dogs let them pee on those bushes do you reaslized that person most likely has to stick there hands in there to deweed
i hate people let there dogs pee on my garden

my neightbor who has No dogs puts alot of time & money into his grass
someone let there unspayed female dog pee there now he has a BIG brown spot
do you think thats fair i dont.........

i think marking can be controlled .............

People pay money for their property and they put in the labor and money to maintain it. It is their property, and that should be respected. You have no right to allow your dog on their property, just as you have no right to sit on the hood of their car. Your dog is your responsibility. If people dont want your dog on their property and you dont respect that, they have every right to be upset. They should however fence the property to avoid the stress. It is a shame that they have to pay to get the respect of their rights as property owners. I have to do the same thing. My dog has went visiting the neighbors on several occasions and their dogs have visited me. I am perfectly fine with dogs coming over, but I dont expect others to hold that view. I certainly dont like it when people come out here and drive quads across our land, but people still do it. I cant teach them respect other than shooting at them and Im not sure I want that reputation. The fix, I either have to pay the 4-6 grand to fence the property or be angry all the time.

I have to agree with some posts here.... Yes... your dog did it ONE time. not a big deal to you. BUT it could be soemthing that happens with EVERY dog that goes by everyday. 50 dogs a day pee on her plants. You never know. Yours could have been the last straw. Yes it seems that since the bush is near the sidewalk it should be expected.... and she may have overreacted.... but as Buckshot said... it is HER property... her yard.... she pays for it and maintains it. whether you like it or not.... SHE cares about dogs peeing in the yard. perhaps when other dogs pee in her y ard she has issues with her own dog getting worked up, or won't go , or gets totally preoccupied with that marked area. You don't really know WHY she was upset. But you should respect her request to not have the dog use her property.

It may seem "prissy" to you.... but that doesn't matter. You may have things you don't like that may seem prissy to someone else.... but you would still get upset if they did it to you.... especially after being told not to do it.

Thanks everyone for the replies!

First of all, let me say that I'm impressed that this thread didn't devolve into a flame war. Even though there's two clear sides here, everyone was respectful in their replies.

It seems to me that, like all good "arguments" (for lack of a better word), there are good points on both sides.

On one side, as Buckshot and sparks19 described very well, it is in fact HER yard and she may spend a good deal of money and effort maintaining her bushes. If she wants to be prissy about it, that's her prerogative. Maybe she does have 50 dogs a day pissing on that particular bush, and maybe I just happened to be the unlucky guy to bore the brunt of her wrath.

On the other side, there are folks like me who don't have our own property that the dog can pee on. I live in a pretty dense suburban area, and the reality is that there just aren't many places to let the dog pee where there is no chance of someone getting upset. Even at the park down the street, people have a couple times confronted me about the dog peeing in the grass at the park, because kids play there and people sit in the grass to watch baseball games.

I guess, in the end, having a dog in a suburban area is simply less than ideal. That doesn't mean that suburbanites shouldn't have dogs, just that we have to be extra careful to be respectful of our neighbors.

Generally Wrigley takes 1 pee per walk although now tries to mark probably 5-6 times--we keep walking and pull him along with us and do not let him go unless we think it's a genuine "go"--we do not stop for him to sniff or look around while walking unless we are giving him a designated bathroom break. We live in a subdivision and generally will only let him go either on the stip which no one owns (outside the park) or on the very perameter which is no ones yard. We always bring a bag. If they start pulling towards someone's yard then too bad they get reeled in a bit closer and have to wait. I'm a mean dog mommy LOL!

That's not to say that they haven't went in someone's yard though! I don't want them to but once in awhile it happens and with Honey (our very skittery scardey-dog) I let her finish if she starts as if I startle her it might make her not pee for a day LOL...I think that yelling at you was crazy though. I understand if she doesn't like it and perhaps even say excuse me sir can you try to not let your dog go on my bush--but yelling is a bit much!

i just wanted to say, thank you for seeing both sides of the argument, as someone who has worked extreemly hard on her garden i can honestly say i personally wouldnt apreciate it if someoens dog came up and peed on my garden/bushes. our dogs have an area of the garden they are allowed to pee, poop, dig run and tear apart, the flowerbeds and front lawn however are off limits and they are very good about staying off, YES fertilizer has amounts of amonia in it, but just like when you over fertilize, if every dog that walks past that bush pees on it, eventually the bush is going to get severe amonia burns (and yes it will build up fairly quickly) and it can perminantly KILL the bush.

i think this neighbor could have adressed the situation properly by asking you nicely, please dont let your dog mark my bushes, every dog is doing it and its slowly killing them!
and hopefully you as a neighbor will realize, while one dogs pee is nothing, when every dog in the neighbourhood is marking that same spot it can easily do permientn damage to someones lawn/garden!

most places have a grassy patch between the actual road and walkway, if so i see nothing wrong with using this as a spot to relive so long as poop is cleaned up. when your dog is peeing 20times in 45 minutes that is teritorial marking and a behavioural issue that can be controled, you are supposed to be the alpha dog, and if hes making you stop every couple minutes to mark a bush or fencepost then hes the one in charge of the walk...if he NEEDS to pee fine, but no healthy dog needs to pee 20 times in 45 minutes, let him do one good pee if he needs it, then when you see him sniffing at anything on the walk that would involve lifting the leg walk on by, when you find an open grassy area neer the end of the walk again give him the oportunity for a pee if he didnt do one at the beginning.

i woudl also find as many of the dog owners in your area and see if theres any interest in getting a dog park put into your local area so you HAVE somewhere safe and apropriate for your dogs to run play and go potty. many of your none dog neighbors will also sighn a petition in favor of a dog park when its explained to them that if you have a dog park more people will take their dogs there and less dogs will be using the sidewalk and gardens as bathroom areas.

next time you see this neightbor just let her know you understand why shes upset, and will try not to let it happen again, but next time if she has an issue youd apreciate it if she could aproach you respectfully and she will be treated in kind :)

>>>>>>>>>>I remember there was a dog park in a magazine that required that you not only took poo bags (like you should), but that you take sponges to mop up any urine on the ground.>>>>

LOL sponges. This is so funny.

anyways. I agree, I would not be happy if someones dog came into my yard to pee. I already have the neighbors cat in my yard which drives me bonkers.(and Dusty too). when we are are for walks, I dont let Dusty get even on a smidge on someones property. The grassy part on the side walk , yes she can go on, other than that no way. There are so many dog owners in our neighborhood , and every day there is dog crap on the grassy part on the side walk , it drives me crazy. Why cant the dog owners clean it up, they just leave it. UGH. I just know if we didnt have a completly fenced in yard , it would be on my lawn.

I think pretty much all there is to say has been said. I just wanted to interject that I am sooooooooo sick and tired of getting covered in dog **** every time I go to weed the flowers by my fence because every dog in the neighborhood decides to pee on my fence. I'm really sorry that they don't have some other place to let their dogs pee, but that shouldn't be MY problem. And I have gotten to the point of going off on some poor girl because I was at my whit's end, so I totally see where your neighbor is coming from.

Large dogs mark and it stinks. My neighbors used to let their dogs pee and poop in our yard. We tried to get them not to do it , but it eventually came down to yelling. My front lawn is where I play with my kids. I sit on the lawn and I do not want to sit in it. My dogs are trained to use the back yard. Sadie is reprimanded if she pees out front , so she doesn't. I put her out back before a walk so she will do her buisness there and not on someone elses property, because I hate it so much.

I'm sorry, but I can understand her. It is not an issue of pee smelling bad, but pee kills grass maybe that is why she got mad. I would not get mad at another owner letting their dog pee at the bush at the corner of our lawn... but we put a lot of time and effort into maintaining our lawn...and yellow spots all over just aren't great.

I know you didn't mean to... but maybe you were the 15th owner letting his dog pee on their property. It was rude of her to go off on you like that... I don't know if you have the nerves to go back and smooth things out... but at least you care! Other people do not care about that, I guess.
