I wouldn't think twice about taking him back smkie. It's true, you might be able to work with him, and it might just be the shock of a new home, dogs, people, whatever, but I'd take him back NOW before either of you are attached to him, and before he's attached to living at your home.
I have said it before, and I'll say it again..........I don't care WHAT a child is doing to one of my dogs (or cats as the case may be) If they hurt a kid in this house, they have to go. They have a choice of retreat, if they don't choose that then I can't trust them anymore. I can't live not trusting them.........not even a question. Kids need to be taught how to behave around animals, yes, but IMO, you have to be able to trust a pet with kids if you have kids or it's just not reasonable to keep it.
Not saying Hy was doing anything, just stating my reaction to a house pet around kids in general.
I hope Hy is all right. I hope this doesn't leave a scar, it heals quickly, and doesn't turn her against kitties
