Smkie, I have to say I'm always so impressed with your knowledge of what to do for animals. I've never heard of the baby food idea and will print it out to keep in my files. I wish I had known about that years ago. So glad he's eating. He will come around. He's got Hyia to help him adjust which is so good. She will feel so good seeing him improve as each day/week goes on.

WEll I don't know what to do now. I heard a blood curdling scream this morning and tore into her room to find that the cat bit her severe enough that we have been 3 hours at the clinic and she is on Bactrim. Not sure if it went all the way through her lip or not. I am just sick about it. SHe wasn't picking him up, she wasn't carrying him around, he was sitting on her lap and he leaped up and clamped down on her lower lip. Some Christmas present isn't it. I went to the animal hospital and asked them about it because there was no warning, no scratch, the cat bit like a cage crazy rat I once knew and that scares me. I don't know if I have done an awful thing. THey said we could bring him back and the lady said she had an a long haired black cat that is at her house, right now, outside because her cat will kill him. SHe said he is quite the lover and we could have him if we wanted. He is up to date on his shots and fixed as well. HE wouldn't be scared of every single sound. Whiskey would have to go back but i am not going to sacrifice my grandaughter's face either. I don't know if giving him more time...I odn't know. WHat would you do. IT is an awful bite...four deep punctures with little teeth marks too. He really clamped down hard.
I wouldn't think twice about taking him back smkie. It's true, you might be able to work with him, and it might just be the shock of a new home, dogs, people, whatever, but I'd take him back NOW before either of you are attached to him, and before he's attached to living at your home.
I have said it before, and I'll say it again..........I don't care WHAT a child is doing to one of my dogs (or cats as the case may be) If they hurt a kid in this house, they have to go. They have a choice of retreat, if they don't choose that then I can't trust them anymore. I can't live not trusting them.........not even a question. Kids need to be taught how to behave around animals, yes, but IMO, you have to be able to trust a pet with kids if you have kids or it's just not reasonable to keep it.
Not saying Hy was doing anything, just stating my reaction to a house pet around kids in general.
I hope Hy is all right. I hope this doesn't leave a scar, it heals quickly, and doesn't turn her against kitties

That's a tough situation. What did the animal hospital have to say about his unexpected behavior? How does Hyia feel about the cat now? I hate to say to give up on him, but if she's scared of him now I don't think that's a healthy situation for anyone.

The apprehension they show at anyone wanting to adopt him makes me wonder if they knew a little more about his personality than they were letting on. Last time I was at a shelter they really tried to sell (not really sell, but you know what I mean) the harder to adopt animals over the ones that you knew would easily get adopted.
I don't know what I'd do in your situation. If there wasn't a child involved I'd be inclined to give him more time to adjust. Good luck, I know you'll settle on a decision that's right for everyone involved.

I took him back. That bite was so hard..no warning, she wasn't carrying him, moving him, picking him up. SHe was sitting there with him on her lap talking to him very quietly which was why her mouth was open. HE didn't hiss, or scratch a warning, he leaped up and bit her lip so hard there is bruising as well as punctures. I can't trust him and i feel bad, I have never taken an animal back in my life. THey have a cat that belongs to one of the assistants. He is an inside outside cat that right now is having to stay outside because her inside cat will kill him if he comes in. He is long haired black and she said he is a total lover. SHe has children. HE will know what to do about the mice, and he will not have a heart attack when the furnace turns on, or someone flushes the toilet. THat is all I know to do. I feel just sick about what happened. THey said he has never done anything like that there. I told them except for the baby beef, and a very tiny amount of kibble he has not eaten and he hasn't had much water either. He only urinated 2 yesterday. HE is not happy here and that factors in as well.

SHe was no spring chicken when i got her either but she would have been boring if I had expected her to be like other cats I had had.

When I lived in Germany the family I lived with had a cat named Tony. It was an EVIL cat! EVIL!!!! and it sounds just like your cat. It was very friendly to me at first, and than a few days after meeting me, it was sitting on my lap while I was watching TV and it just ATTACKED me! I hadn't even moved, nor was I touching the cat in any way other than it laying in my lap...and it had been there for at least 15 minutes sleeping. That cat is the reason I don't really like cats anymore.
If I were you, I would take the cat back NOW. I would take the black cat that the woman said she had. If this cat attacked unprovoked once, I wouldn't be able to trust it around my children(or myself!!!) ever again. I pretty much agree with Coop 100%.

I had a siamese rip me one across the eyelid. A dog that bit and his canine went between my eye and teh socket, hurt like hell but didn't do very much damage. I was lucky. I have only seen a cat bite like this twice and both times it was a male cat that was fighting and I was stupid enough to try to stop it.

Smkie, if it is any consolation, black cats a virtually unadoptable, that is why I have three of them. You can get a pretty, loving cat that no one will take just because of the color.
Also, my kids are convinced that long haired black cats absorb bad luck and keep it away from their families. I am not superstitious, but they really believe it.

If there is scarring it will be minimal because they are punctures not rips in her skin. SHe was upset when she came home and was told he was gone but not for long. Hopefully a cat that has been an indoor outdoor cat with experience will not be a flipped out terror. This has been one really bad day from beginning to end, this was only the start and i am glad it's over with. I throw in the towel. I am just beat.

I do know that Izzy's milkfang canine went all the way through my bottom lip the morning after her first night home with us and I freaked out but she was just a scared puppy asking for food (its what I told myself anyways) So accidents can happen of that ilk. A full mouth bite does sound rather violent though and I'm positive you did what was right for your family's safety.
Hopefully Hyia won't hold any long lasting fear of cats and you ladies can add a feline addition that does work for your family in the near future.

Sorry that happened to you too. A bite to the hand or such is nothing compared to one to the face. Even if it is by accident.
