Subject: Animal Gestapo right to enter your home
I thought some of you might find this interesting to read. It seems dog owners are losing more rights. It just keeps getting worse.
CROSSPOSTED FROM ANOTHER LIST

(feel free to crosspost)

Very sad day in El Paso, Texas today. The agenda to amend the animal possession ordinance appears to be about to pass.
This will establish the birth of the Animal Gestapo that has the right to enter any home and confiscate (put to death) any puppy or dog that is not microchipped, not registered, or not otherwise in compliance with the ordinance (no more than
5 animals total per house). Crafters of this legislation are the infamous animal rights group "Pets Alive" affiliated with ...of course...the PETA terrorist movement....the same group that ramrodded the Austin legislation that outlawed breeding in that city. How can this be happening in the US..obviously not the home of the FREE anymore.
I know you are all saying...not here..and not in my town...but they are winning and they WILL get to you in time..maybe 2
years..maybe 5 years..but we are losing. So very sad that most in opposition are afraid to say anything in fear of being targeted by the all encompassing powers being given to ACO (Animal Control Officers).

Uhhhhhh, 4th Amendment anyone? I am willing to bet that NOBODY called the drafters of this "law" on that.

At risk of being flamed, here are the thoughts that are going through my mind:

A permit required to breed, with a maximum of 2 litters per year. Required vaccinations/licensing. Updated requirements mandating shelter, care, prohibiting cruel restraint, and making sure sick/ill animals are quarrentined. Required microchipping. Officers with the capability to run either education programs, or inspect houses/facilities to see these things are required.

On this forum, we complain about puppy mills. We flame people who don't take proper care of their dogs, or are cruel. But now that a city has passed an actual law trying to mandate these things, things that responsible dog owners would do anyway, the forum goes berzerk.

Whose rights are being violated? The backyard breeder who breeds 10 litters a year? The person who doesn't think their dog needs rabies vaccines? The guy who keeps his dog chained to a tire in the backyard?

Anybody else see the irony here?

Initially, my reaction was the same as everyone elses: outrage. But after thinking, what's the difference between this and current child welfare laws? As long as it's not BSL, I really don't see a problem here.

Could you imagine someone showing up at your door and requiring to see proof of microchipping of your kids?!? (Or even proof of immunizations for that matter......they would have to have some sort of reasoning to even do that-not just random...). Or what if they said "you can only have 2 kids, no more, because that's all we, the almighty government, feel you can have" (hmmm...Communist China?) Where is the difference here?

Gempress, you are right. Many of the required aspects are good. They do help the animals and hopefully install some responsible ownership. What I am complaining about is the right to enter any home, at anytime. And, I still don't see why microchipping is mandatory. Even though it is a good idea, (I have mine done) I don't think that makes someone a bad dog owner if they don't have their animals microchipped.

Here is another problem with it for us animal lovers who want to do good.
"PAWS fails to exempt individuals and organizations that rescue dogs and place them in new homes."
Small rescue groups and individuals will no longer be able to function. This will distroy rescue at least on a smaller more personal level, Say your local rescue.

If your children aren't immunized, you can't have them in school. Children can speak up if there are problems. They meet other people every day: at school, around town, their friends, their relatives.

Dogs have nobody but their owners. They can't talk. And sad to say, few people will speak up when they see a dog being abused.

As to the limits to the number of dogs, I dunno. I wasn't able to find any articles on that. Can somebody point me to a link on that legislation? I'd like to read up on it.

Microchipping is mandatory, according to the city ordinance, because they're trying to reduce the number of dogs in shelters. Mainly to save the city money, but if reduces the number of dogs PTS, I won't complain.

Basically, I know this law has flaws. But I think that the good intent is there.

The intention is good in all dog laws. However, they get carried to far. I wish the original poster from the other websight would have put that in. I will check the fila forum and see if anything new is there concerning this.

Gempress, I'm with you. What the h*ll do we have to get so flamed about when this is the kind of stuff spewing out of our mouths everyday? WHY MICROCHIP??? Well, it would be to show you are a dedicated owner who always wants to know the whereabouts about YOUR DOG! Too bad gov't hasn't passed anything yet to come door to door and check up on how kids are being treated. They should be microchipped now, too, as far as I'm concerned. There should be tests you must take before having a kid or getting a dog as far as I'm concerned... but I guess that only applies to getting a freakin' driver's license in this country...

ElinHunter, you are right there. Why doesn't the gov step in and do something with actual children. Too many are abused, abandoned and ignored in this country. the same as animals.
My complaint is..I feel I am losing my in alienable rights more everyday. If I came from Mars or Jupiter I may have more say in what is going on. All in all it is pretty interesting. That is why I posted this thread. I actually read about texas bsl today. I didn't realize we had it in place. I'm not going to flame anyone...I just thought everyone had a right to see a new ordinance to dog laws.

wow.....I know that sometimes the govt can be helpful for dealing w/situations of abuse and such, but I sure as heck don't want the gov't coming to MY door to question how I'm raising my kids, that's a bit intrusive in my opinion. My children are very well taken care of, what right does the govt have to pry into my home??......And I certainly don't feel the need to have my kids microchipped-I've had them fingerprinted, I think that'll do just fine.
