Well, I was on another forum and some lady jumped down my throat about letting my dogs ride in the bed of the truck.

Honestly, is it really THAT bad?! Holy cow, everyone around here lets their dogs ride in back of the truck. I really didn't know that some people took it so seriously. I can't believe she was so mean about it. It ticked me off

Just wanted to rant.....

One time my dads dog jumped off the back of a truck and it tore off its face, killing it . Keep the dog in the backseat.

My dogs would never jump out. They aren't that stupid. They won't jump out period unless I let the tailgate down.

Driving period isn't safe, but they love the back and I just can't see confining them in the car (they hate it inside).

They do good. They know they aren't allowed to get out unless the tailgate is put down. They would stay in the back for 3 days if the TG was up LOL

It doesn't bother me much, as long as the dogs know to stay in place and not move too much. It's often not the dogs I don't trust, but other drivers. One bump from a careless driver and your dogs might be sent all over and get unjured. But again, it can happen on the back seat, too.

There's a beautiful dog in one of the rescues here - a German Shepherd/Husky mix, who's up for adoption because he fell out of the bed of his owner's truck when his owner hit a bump too hard and broke his leg. Vets see dogs with eye injuries from road debris too often as well, so it's really not just a matter of will your dog stay in the bed or jump out - there are a lot of factors beyond your control. And you never know when someone will come around a corner in your lane and you'll have to swerve suddenly to avoid a head-on. Just some things you might not have thought about.

Driving through a smallish town in slow traffic is one thing, but out on the highway is an entirely different matter.

Thats true driving isnt safe. Being belted in could even be your undoing. I personally wont have my dog in the back of my truck on the highway or in town. Out on the back roads though I will (depending on how he rides). It doesnt take much of a bump to heave a load out of a pick up bed when the truck is going over 30 miles an hour if it isnt lashed down. My sister in law was thrown out at about 20 miles an hour going through a pasture when my brother in law hit a pararie dog mound. She broke several bones in her foot. I think the next time we have her in the back we should lash her down.
