Ok I am working on Potty training my pup, I just adopted. He is 3 months old. Please give me suggestions or tips if I should be doing anything different.

Here is what I do:

- Crate him at night and when we are gone. (So far no accidents in the crate)
- Put him out first thing when we wake up or when we come home.
- Give lots of Praise when he does go outside.
- If he does pee/poop in the house and I catch him in the act, I yell a firm "NO!" Take him back to the spot where he messed and swat his butt. Then immediately put him outside. Since he has already messed in the house I know he is not going to go again outside but I do leave him out there for 10 minutes or so.
- He does go out about every hour and a half or so. I tie him out on our porch, it’s a 30ft tie out. (I posted a while back that he only would poop on cement, well he is doing much better about that now.) I try to watch out the window to make sure he goes.

Ok I think that’s all... please give me your opinions on if I am doing this correct. He still has about two accidents in the house a day, which I know will happen because he is a pup.

For example, this morning my husband let him out. He watched him go pee and then let him back in a few minutes later. No more than 5 minutes later, he was pooping on my carpet...LOL.

So suggestions are welcome... Thanks for any info you can offer us :D

O.K. here are my thoughts and suggestions. First of all you are doing a good job but there are things that I disagree with and things I think will help you out.
1) If he has an accident, yes tell him "no" but do not swat him... just take him straight outside and tell him "potty outside"
2) When your husband took him out this morning and he peed he should've left him out there just a little longer to poop. We have 2 adopted yorkies that we found out will go outside on the leash pee and run back to the porch to come in. Well 5 minutes after their in they poop... this happened everytime after they ate breakfast or dinner and at bedtime. Needless to say we figured out really quick that even though they want to come in, they need to stay out there until they poop. No accidents for a while.
3) Every hour and a 1/2 is probably too long to wait to take a 3 month old out, I would probably try every hour for the next month then gradually increase it. We take the 2 7 year old boys out every 1 1/2 to 2 hours unless they are waking up.

Just a few thoughts... Keep up the good work...

ok thanks I will try that... he is doing much better the past 2 days, only 1 accident in the house and I caught him in the act. I put him outside and told him go potty and he went! I gave him treats! :D I was a proud momma! hehe.

Something that will help you in your timing is to remember that after a pup eats, a short nap is in order - 10-15 minutes or so, then a very short play session and he should be ready to go out and move those bowels. You don't want to get him playing immediately after eating; he needs to be quiet for awhile on a full tummy.

He's going to be able to hold it longer and longer as he gets older. Some of the very small dogs just have to go out and eliminate frequently, like YorkieLover's little ones, but you don't see that as often in the larger dogs when they are adults unless there is a physical problem.
