So I've allways loved them. I have shown a couple and they were nice dogs but I didnt exactly spend alot of time with them. I know blowing them out there is ALOT of hair, but what are they like every day in the home? Differences males vs female? Temperment? Good with kids? Other dogs??

Thanks

I grew up with a Malamute and I LOVED her. She was a great girl and if it wasn't for the fact that I doubt I'd find another like her I'd get one in a second.

Please keep in mind that Loupie was severely overweight (thus not very entergetic), was left loose to room over the countryside (and didn't stray), and could be trusted with cattle and cats - not very typical of the breed at all. And it is the typical northern breed mentality, plus same sex dog aggression issues, that keeps me from going out and getting another.

Here is what I remember about her: she loved to dig, and definitally didn't mind snow. She had food aggression issues and was severely dog aggressive. She got along with our male dog Blackie, but she and Rose never saw eye to eye and Loupie they'd get in to fights every now and then. She loved to talk and howl and she never met a stranger. Every person, be they UPS driver or family friend, was met with lots of kisses (her nickname was "Licky"), a grin, and a wagging tail. She adored kids and she was a buddy to my brother and I growing up. I'd brush mats out of her fur and pull burrs out and she would just sit there without a peep or squirm. She'd sometimes knock the little kids over on accident just due to her sheer size, but she definitally didn't mean to and tried to be gentle with them. She shed a TON. She also had a fetish for corn and would go out into the field and pull down a stalk so she could eat the corn off the cobs. lol

The neighbors had a male Mal as well, but I only remember him slightly, as he died of heat stroke shortly after we moved next door. He was also a lover and ADORED us kids. Sweet, sweet boy. He was in great shape and very athletic, but he too was trusted around cats and livestock (and left to roam the countryside). Unfortunately, Blackie and he HATED one another, and it was getting to the point where there would be a massive dog fight every time one of us kids stepped outdoors (because Wiley would come over to see us kids, and Blackie would try to fight him off - and they were both intact males). The neighbors ended up chaining him up in their yard and he died of heat stroke one summer. :(

I loved Loupie, though, and everytime I see a Malamute my heart just melts. <3

Loupie was so pretty! That photo just melts my heart, and reminds me of the Husky I had growing up even though she didn't look like Loupie at all, but had the same smile. :)

I'd also like to know a bit about Mals, so I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread. I've had huskies, but haven't ever even met a Malamute.

The only one I knew personally was supposedly a low content wolf hybrid, but looked all malamute. He was a big dude, at 130 lbs. A little of that was just being overweight, but he was a big dog overall.

He belonged to my boss. They lived on a 5 acre parcel in the country and he was free to roam. He never left their acreage unless I took the kids for a walk, and then he'd mosey along with us picking berries with his teeth the whole way. He'd follow along to my aunt's house and got along extremely well with their mastiff mix and their GSD (male and female, all three dogs were neutered).

He adored people and kids. NOT a guard dog, or even a watch dog. He would never steal food from a child, but if they were eating around him he'd walk up all sly and "accidentally" whomp them with his butt as he walked by. And if their food just happened to hit the ground, well, no sense in letting it go to waste!

Safe with my aunt's cattle and horse, he'd try very hard to resist poultry. He'd do great for months and then one day my boss would come home to find smears of blood all over the duck yard and a very sheepish dog with feathers all over his lips. He did do well with their lop rabbit though. The rabbit was indoor/outdoor and tame enough they let him roam in the yard during the day and he never ran away. The dog was good friends with the tame rabbit, but regularly hunted and killed wild rabbits.
He ended up living to be 16, died of cancer.

I have looked after a few malamutes and they were all very good dogs. they are the BIGGEST teddy bears!!!! I love them but would never get one. Too big and too much shedding. They are talkers. they more talk to you rather than just make noise for no reason. Interesting that both the owners said they were food and toy aggressive. I took care of them for a couple of weeks each and didn't find them so. they are so big and powerful that I think people are intimidated by them. Even maybe their owners. Neither of them walked on the leash very well. Big pullers. They had a halty. Something to teach them while they are still small!! I took one of them to the beach, kept my fingers crossed and let him off the leash. He had a great recall!!! He scared a couple for he was running in their direction - I saw them freeze, probably wondering if they should run from the big bear!! - and I calle dout his name and he came racing back. Besides knocking you over with their size they were both very gentle. From looking after huskies and malamutes i would recommend the malamute any day. they're less cheeky.

I'm pretty sure the breed as a whole has same sex aggression issues and food aggression issues. (That is what I have read, anyways, and my experience with them seems to reinforce that.) Can't really say, though, because I've only met a handful.

My best friend in high school had one. Big teddy bear. Had issues in the summer was a lump in the heat. Shedded like a mofo 12 months of the years. Some times were worse than others.. but they vacuumed daily and the furniture was covered in fur though he never laid on it. You'd go home wearing a fur suit..
