Akitas and Bassett Hounds, oh my.

I'm very interested in both of these breeds and have done extensive research on them. I was just wondering if anyone on the board had actually owned one of these breeds or had some kind of experience with them. Thanks in advance.

I had a GSD/Akita mix for many years. I got him at the pound . . . to this day he is the standard against which my Dad measures all other dogs

Well that's good to hear! A lot of uninformed people seem to think that Akitas are vicous creatures that will kill any small animal it can get a hold of. While the hunt instinct is in their nature, I don't think it means that all the dogs are going to be rabid monsters! I met someone once who told me that their Akita actually found an injured critter in some woods and nursed it back to health.

Oh, Bear was death on groundhogs . . . but he loved the cat As far as being vicious, well, he was a certified therapy dog

Death on ground hogs? He killed Ground Hogs?! At least he was okay with the cat. I have a cat. But she's a bit per snickedy and is bigger then some dogs.

Yeah, he killed groundhogs. I've seen him catch them while they were sitting right next to their holes. You'd never expect a dog that big to be that quick.

I've never owned either but I had a friend with a Basset. Cute dog, but
they really are large dogs just with short legs, and they do have a pronounced 'hound odor.' I've read that Akitas have a tendency toward dog-aggression.
