I love my puppy :) She's a sweetheart... but lately she has picked up a lovely little habit - digging in the yard :( I let her in from going potty and she's got dirt all over her and her paws are muddy... Anyone have any help for this problem?

How much time out is she getting? how much daily mental stimulation?

We have a big yard, the dogs are allowed to dig anywhere down the bottom end of it. Funniest thing I ever saw was Mac in terrier mode searching something out, then she decided Harry would probably be able to move more dirt faster, she got out of the hole, told him to get in then proceeded to put her paw on his head and push him down into the hole. "Faster Harry. EFFICIENCY! GO!"

lol, we're already doing the tub of water and towels dance. She's probably not getting the mental stimulation she needs :( I had finals this week, so the training has been slacking. She is inside most of the time, but she is outside a lot during the day, mostly for potty breaks. She stays out side no longer than 45 minutes by herself, but she's usually outside for more like 15 minutes at a time. She's pretty independent. She has lots of toys outside and likes to play out there. And dig, lol. I know that dogs love to dig, and I'm willing to accept that if I must. Everyone has their quirks.

You can always get a sandbox, nothing fancy just a wood or plastic one filled with playsand. Bury toys in there for her to find so it's more fun than digging in dirt. Redirect her to it when she start digging someplace else and soon enough she'll dig in a proper place, and sand is not as dirty as dirt (just be sure to keep it covered at night/in bad weather). Of course if you leave it open for a few days you'll get yummy kitty poops which will make the dog want to dig in there even more!!...just kidding, well sort of.

Does she dig in the exact same spots? If so, a little investigating on your part might reveal a few things. Perhaps you can learn a few things just by watching her (perhaps from a window) once you let her out.

One of the biggest reasons for destructive behavior from dogs has to do with boredom. Has your work schedule changed? or has something changed in the amount of time spent with her that she's feeling lonely?

Here's an article that might shed some additional light on the problem...

Good Luck!
