I know what would be perfect! You need a blackmouth cur, like my Zeus! Very sweet, not overly active, and great with children. They're also quite handsome, but I may be a bit biased. ;)

The downside is that they may be hard to find. But if you can find one, I definately recommend it!

We went to a local humane society today and checked out a couple of dogs. The one we speciafically went to see if being quarantined with kennel cough, so we'll head back in a couple of days.

I'd LOVE to find a dog like your Zeus. He's precious. ;)

Well I have a Shar Pei/Malamute/Pit Bull mix and he wouldn't hurt a fly <3 However, I would not go for Malamute, because the purebreds have a strong prey drive. Shar-peis and Pit Bulls are generally dog-agressive, but with people they should be fine :3 However, purebred Shar-Peis require wrinkle cleaning, I believe. They are also prone to ear infections. I'm also quite fond of GSDs, but they too have a prey drive due to being a herding breed, so for children, a German Shepherd would not be the best choice.

Also a dog that fits the bill, would be a coonhound. I love mine.. she is great.. short hair/ very little shedding... she has the bay voice when she sees something she wants. Coonhounds are very very loyal dogs, they are family dogs and they are protectors. Mine is afriad of cats and squirrels but is not scared off from people. Coonhounds love kids.. (though teaching how to fetch will be fun, since its not something they were bred to do). They love excerise and sleeping on the couch. They are active if you are active.. and if not.. then sleeping is good too. (Mines sleeps about 16 hours a day). I know there are many coonhounds out there.. from redticks to blueticks.. to redbones. Hounds are great.. they are a bit bigger.. mine is 8 months old and is about 40lbs she will only get to be maybe 50-60lbs. Also they are great listeners.. they will do anything to please you. Though training is required with this breed.. but nothing is more loyal to a boy than a hound.. coon or not. (though be warned.. they are scent hounds and they will follow there nose). we adopted mine from a shelter, she was unwanted because she is not "hunter worthy". Also a lot of coonhounds are abandoned because of the "voice" and once the hunting season is over.. they are not needed. They are great dogs.. There is no rescue here in denver for them.. but finding one on pet finder isnt hard. Let me know what kind you get.

EVERYBODY needs a blackmouth cur like Zeus. I saw one on petfinder around here once and he looked just like Zeus, he was so dang cute I send his pic around to a whole bunch of people here. He got adopted pretty fast though.

Gawd Gemp I just found one in NY who's on the euth list for the third time. It seems his owners "Just don't love him". Ack!
