Does anyone here have experience with Adequan to share?

Bailey has been doing physical rehab for his back legs; one of his legs is slightly longer than the other, causing him to favor one, resulting in a lack of muscle development in one of the legs. (As an aside, I followed up on this because, when he runs, he runs at an angle! It's pretty cute but obviously not ideal. ;)).

Anyway, we just completed his initial 8 week program today. He's going to continue with weekly underwater treadmill and therapeutic exercise sessions (with additional evaluations with the vet and his primary rehab therapist). I asked today about joint supplements, and the vet and therapist recommended Dausequin -- so I got him started on it. The other thing that the vet suggested I might want to consider was Adequan. She gave me a brochure and said we could talk about it more if I was interested.

Obviously, I'm going to talk to her some more before I start Bailey on it. She has holistic leanings (and knows that I do, too), and I did see a favorable article by Christie Keith when I did a Google search. So I'm interested. Also, of course, I want to understand better from them why it's appropriate in B's case.

Sorry for yet another long-winded post. Does anyone have thoughts or experience with Adequan?

I know of many anatolian owners that have and are using adequan. From what I understand it depends upon the dog how they react. Some dogs get the initial injections every 2-3 weeks and then get monthly injections after that, but some are getting bi-weekly injections still. Some have experienced that after a couple of years, it starts to lose it's effectiveness. From all that I've read, it does work wonders but not sure about the lasting effect. I know the cost for the shots varies. My vet charges $50 a shot and some I've heard charge $65 a shot.

I do know that K9 Full Flex is being used by many and dogs are having great results from it. K9 FullFlex

I had an old boy with arthritis in the shoulder that used it and it helped him a lot. I used Cosequin at the same time just to add benefits ...

My horse trainer uses it on her fairly elderly corgi with fantastic results. They'd had to build her a ramp to get up the big step into their house at one point she was so bad; now, on the Adequan, she just jumps up the step, even at 2 years older. I'm not sure the frequency she uses it. With horses, we originally did every 6 weeks many years ago; now vets are saying you get the best results about 48 hours later, and it starts to fade within a week or so.

We just started Julian on it. It's our first week, though, so no results yet. I'm not sure on cost..I think it varies clinic to clinic. Since I pay just over cost, it was cheaper for me to buy the entire bottle since I'd be doing the injections at home anyway.

The clients at work whose dogs are on it seem to have good results with it, though.

Thanks so much, everyone, for chiming in with your experiences -- it's very much appreciated.

I'm still a little confused about its application to B's case. I definitely want to talk about it with her some more to understand better whether it's addressing an immediate issue/concern or if it's more preventative, perhaps because it's relatively more likely that he will develop joint issues?

In our case, Jules has a bit of an arthritic elbow as well as the beginnings of arthritis elsewhere. It doesn't bother him constantly, just once in awhile. But, I figured since it's pretty reasonable for me, I'd start him off early. He gets cranky when he's sore and lord knows the snippy terrier doesn't need additional reasons to be pissy:rolleyes:

I would think it's preventative for the inevitable due to wear and tear from the issues he's currently dealing with.

No experience with it with dogs, but I've had amazing results with it with the horses. I have a young mare with a bit of arthritis in her one hock - possibly due to trauma due to casting herself in her stall. She has never been lame on it, the vet had a hard time seeing it, but I notice a huge difference in her stride and the movement of that leg when she got her shot that month vs. when she's been off of it for awhile (like now). It was like night and day only a couple days after the first shot. We gave it to her once a week for the first 4 week, and then after that once a month. I highly, highly recommend it.

:( He's only just barely three. And I swear, if it's not one thing it's another with that boy.

Anyway, enough wallowing. Thanks so much again to everyone who responded --it's truly appreciated. I'll talk to them again when I'm back in town; I am leaning towards going forward with the injections at this point.
