Ok so my 6 month old puppy has been sick for almost a week. It started with him throwing up his food and then led into diahrreah. He got better in about 2 days and started eating some. But now he hasnt ate since Monday morning. I took him to the vet early this morning and they basically took a stab in the dark and said it could just be a virus. They ruled out parvo because the diarrhea isnt bloody. They put him on 3 meds......1 to stop the diarrhea, 1 to settle his stomach and 1 is an antibiotic. Im really worried about him because he still hasnt ate a bite since monday and now he has stopped drinking water. The vet said he wasnt dehydrated but his gums and inside is ears are pale which is a sign of sickness. His demeanor is just fine......still aggravating the hell out of the cat and playing like normal. But I cant get him to eat. Any ideas? He wont even eat the special canned food the vet reccomended.

I thought you found this forum ridiculous?

For what it's worth I think you should consider any poisons or other toxins he could have gotten into. Have you bribed him with his favourite treats? Canned salmon or tuna? Weiners? Cheese? Anything to get him going. Is it possible that someone is feeding him on the side? I have an old neighbour that loves to feed Sakari and she's always trying to escape and go visit him. If he's still active he's probably getting some nutrients from somewhere else.

I'd talk to your vet again and maybe get a second opinion. It doesn't sound like he was that thorough.

A second opinion- pronto.

Your pup has not eaten since Monday morning? It's Friday!

Pale gums are a possible sign of dehydration.

Tests should be run.. have you tried boiled rice and chicken or hamburger? Anything? Treats? Cheese? His most favorite treat?

Poor pup...

Perhaps it could be an allergy? Honey recently started vomiting and having diahrrea and they suspect beef allergy even though she had been eating it for a couple week with no obvious problems. They did much the same thing--gave her something to settle her stomach and clavamox (antibiotic). I started off feeding boiled brown rice and cottage cheese and worked up to canned lamb and rice now--she is doing well.

I would try any kind of food--hot dogs, cheese ect things that your pup would normally love--what happens if you open their mouth and put a small piece of food in--do they spit it out?

well if the vet gave you some meds i would wait and see if he starts feeling better throughout the day... but yes keep trying to coax him to eat and especially drink... if no improvment I would take him back tomorrow.
hope he feels better soon!!!!!

He maybe ate a half a cup of food last night finally. He eats his treats I give him for going out to the bathroom, but it seems he cant hold them down for long. Im gonna give the meds a chance I guess unless he starts getting weak and all that.

I got lucky with the meds, the vet said I may have to shove them down his throat. But this crazy dog cant wait to eat his pills LOL

Well I have an appointment today with another vet to see if we can figure out what is wrong with Ace. Since last Tuesday, he has maybe ate 1 cup of food, and hasnt drank much water at all. His gums continue to be pale.

Its just weird because he doesnt act any different at all. But I have been reading that pale gums can mean he is anemic with a low red blood cell count. If that is the case I dont know what Ill do. My finances simply wont be able to support a special needs dog. Hopefully its just something minor.

Just got back from the vet and they did x-rays and found he has swallowed something that wont pass from his stomach. It something about the circumference of a marker and maybe 1/4 inch tall, something in the form of a ring. I dont have a clue what it is, most likley something that caught his attention in the yard. The vet said for me to try rice with metamucil on it for a few days and if he dont pass it we will have to do emergency surgery. And if thats the case, I dont know what I will do cause that will be expensive.

get a tube of NutriCal it will give me calories put it on your fingers and wipe it on the roof of his mouth it will force him to have something.
He may eat it without putting it there but it is a good back up.

Get Pedia lite reg and use that in his water.

Ive saved many a dog from NYC streets with this.

where can I get nutrical?

I am beginning to get really worried because just today he has started losing his energy. I did as the doc said and cooked some rice and sprinkled metamucil over it, but he wont touch it.

I dont know what else to do because no matter what I offer him to eat or drink he doesnt touch it. The doctor said give him the rest of the week to see what happens. As bad as I hate it, I may have to get rid of him. I cant afford to pay for emergency surgery. I will feel like the scum of the earth if I have to do this, but I may not have a choice.

OMG, I am VERY stunned here.

You "vet" tells you to wait a WEEK when your dog hasn't eaten barely anything in a week and he is dehydrated, and he tells you to wait another WEEK! WTH?! That's INSANE!

That "thing" needs to come out now! He will probably starve himself because he's in pain and can't eat!

Wow......

I can't help but agree! ^

Your pup is NOT eating. He needs that surgery- last week!

Being a pet owner means being able to take care of any emergencies that may arise- get your pup help!

I have to agree with the previous posters. I'd either demand it be removed immediately, or find another vet ASAP. After one week already, it seems insane to spend another week playing wait and see.

As far as you last comment about possibly having to get rid of him...I'm not going to judge you as I have no idea what your situation is. But please don't do something like that before examining all options. Leave no stone unturned.

Well he has been to 2 different vets in a week......I cant keep going to different ones.

I did something I normally dont do, I put his food in his cage tonight while I took a shower and he has ate almost all his rice! Thank goodness. So hopefully this will work.

StunnedMonkey, thank you for your comment and I ask all you others please dont judge me as well. I understand having a dog is a responsibility, but sometimes the money just runs out...dog or no dog.

If that dog vomits tonight you need to get it back to the vet.
An impacted GI tract can turn deadly in nothing flat.
I can't believe the vet said to wait a frickin' week. Glad that's not my vet, well it wouldn't be my vet.

And believe me I know how $$ it is, I went through it with my German Shepherd the first winter I had him.
Barium Study, IV's, Overnights...yeah it was expensive but he's alive
