Does anyone have one? I'd love to get one but I don't know anything about them. The actual pool looks affordable. Do you need to change the water much or how do you keep it clean? I wish I had one right now but maybe next spring I can afford one. Anything to look for?

We have a 15 foot round/ 4 feet deep, steel wall above ground pool. It's nice for the kids, and I get in when I am hot from yard work.

Our pump & filter set up is not what came with the pool. We have a large sand filter and a stronger pump made to keep a 24 foot in ground pool clean :) makes my job easier. I only run the filter about an hour a day during summer.........turn it on and leave it. About once a week I 'vacuum' the pool floor, which is a vacuum head attached to a hose that goes to the skimmer.

About every few days I have a little test kit to check PH level & Chlorine levels..........you fill the little thing with pool water and add drops of the tester fluid. You check it against the color chart to be sure it is in the "safe" zone. EASY.

We use a Chlorine with built in Clarifier..........we have never needed anything else to keep water clean, clear, and safe. The stuff we use comes from Meijers and costs 20.00.........we usually go through 3 cannisters per summer.

We only add water when it gets splashed out or evaporates too low for the skimmer (little box that the water flows into for filter) And for the winter we drain water below skimmer, add lots of Chlorine, and cover till spring.

This is all the info I can think of right now.

So do you think it's a lot of work? Or expensive? I've never had a hot tub or anything really where I had to test ph levels. Fish once but easy fish :p

I'd love to have a pool. I'd be in it all summer :p

We have one. Had it for over 12 years years now.. maybe 15 even. Still using the original everything. Had the pump serviced once. Skim the leaves when someone gets in daily. Vacuum maybe weekly. Chlorine and stuff once a week.. Drain it below skimmer level for winter.. Add water if it's been hot and evaporating and no rain..
It's been good for us.

We put it in ourselves and leveling and prepping the base sucked, and was work.. Maintaining it has been no issue though.

I would love for our dogs to go in.........but the pool has a plastic liner.

Plastic liner + dog claws = holes and repair work :(

and I don't remember the brand right now.........we just installed a new one this year (same size as old one) Our old one finally had it, and it was a Hayward or something like that.

Above ground pools . . . do they still exist? Two of my aunt's had them back in the 90's, as did one of my good friends. But I haven't seen an above ground pool in YEARS!! It's in-ground or nothing in my area.

what does the base have to be?
By base I am assuming you mean the floor under pool before you actually install the pool.........if this is incorrect, disregard this post.

To properly install a hard walled above ground pool you must clear all hard objects (obviously) and remove grass where it will actually sit. I was told that this is because of the rotting the smothered grass will do.....smell, and whatever else. You then need a sand base (floor) Once the walls are put up, you shove sand over to the wall and let it angle down, all the way around the INSIDE perimeter, the top angle being about 4 inches high. This helps secure the wall so it doesn't give way with all the water pressure pushing from the inside.

After that you install your liner over it..........Viaola.

And Sis Morphine..........I don't want to pay more property taxes for an inground pool..........I pay WAAAAAAAAAY too much as it is :D

As for dogs in them...

Small dogs only. The kind you can lift up, carefully lower in, and make sure they don't get to the liner. We've had the Cocker in a few times on hot days, but something like Buster could be too fast, or frantic and put a nice hole in it...

Besides, I don't want to lift a gangly 40lb dog over the 4ft wall! Its much easier to pass a compact 30lb dog over.

The pool wouldn't be just for us, it would be for them as well. So whatever pool we got would need to be able to house Buddy, lol. He wouldn't accept having a pool and not being allowed in it.

Well BP an above ground pool isn't for you then :) If they make one without a plastic (vinyl) lining I have never seen it. The problem is not so much with putting holes in the bottom because the dog won't touch bottom...........it is when the doggie paddles over to the side and scrapes it with the paws, and the bigger/stronger the doggie, the quicker more damage can happen.

If you get yourself an above ground........get the dogs a smaller version in a hard plastic to sit near yours :D

I don't understand why an overground pool should be made of anything different to a below ground level pool????? Couldn't it be made with skimmed brick walls and tiled?

We had an above ground pool up in New England for about 2 years. My parents put it together themselves, and we got a lot of use over it in the summers!

I've seen houses with porches connecting from the house, built around the above ground pools, so that it is just as accessible as an inground pool. That way, they could lounge in chairs around the pool, the pool was accessible to the dogs, and they didn't have to climb up a ladder to get into the pool.

I haven't seen an above ground pool here in Florida, though. My parents' have an inground pool at their house, and it seems to be less maintenance than the above ground pool. Then again, no one has to close off their pool down here during the winter months.
