Hi there well we've had Ginger for a month and a half actually today. since we've had her, she was curious about one of our cats, Rebel. When she would approach Rebel, the cat, would hiss and swing a paw. I figured that since she liked both Shadow (14yrs old cat) and Mademoiselle Kama (3month old kitten), this would pass, well it has not. She runs after Rebel wanting to get him. She really goes after him she's barking, I have to actually say her name a couple of times before she actually stops. what can I do to stop her??

Ok, This is a tough one. My dog Lucky does this too. He goes after the cats that dont want to play with him. One thing you could do is distract him like offer him a toy or something when he does this. The other thing is try to keep them seperated until they get used to eachother. The first one will probably suit you best.

well I don't think it's because Rebel doesn't want to play with her cause she doesn't do it to Shadow and shadow does not play with anyone. She's the old fat cat. But Ginger does not run after her. She doesn't play with Mademoiselle either they just sometimes cuddle. She has everything needed to keep her entertained 2 bones, toys coming out of her wasoo lol.
as you said it is a tough one

Thats a sign of boredom. She could be just exercising too. Once my cats start playing my dog wants to and when they stop. He dont want to stop. I think its a dog wanting to live the life of a cat. It might be that ginger wants to play. The only way I can see how to stop this is sepration. How old is ginger. It may also be a puppy phase too.

Honestly my puppy chases my cats all the time. Sometimes they come back the same way and the cats are chasing her right back. She tries to herd them, nips and all but she never harms them. Most cats just need to show the Five Razors and the puppy understands the concept if he goes too far.

I think it's a form of puppy play and the cats know it as well. Two of my cats hang out with her all the time and if you ask me, they all get some exercise in the process when that happens. My two elderly cats don't hang out with her as much because they think she's a pest.

I think if your cat felt threatened you would see less of her around the dog. I'm a doggie novice but I do know cats and cats are no fools as you already know. Then too, there's always some kind of pecking order thing going on. Unless you get a sense that the dog wants to hurt her, I wouldn't really worry because you know that cats can stay away from that which makes them feel threatened. If the cat still hangs around, it's a good sign.

I think Chemikal is right, it's probably puppydom.

my cats are 15 and 16 years old and the dogs only 6. They like to play some times yet sometimes when the dog wants to play the cats swipe and hiss at him. I think they telling him to go take a hike somewhere. He wakes them up when they sleeping and he wants to play. I dont think he likes that.

When my dog wants to play with the cat, and he slaps her, she thinks he's trying to play with her too. So when he runs away from her, she goes after him in hopes that he will smack her again, encouraging her to play

It can be one of the hardest friendships to form, dogs and cats, and at other times, its one of the easiest. With my cat Becker, Max thought it was great to chase and pounce him. Now for small Becker having a 60kg boofer in the house was terrifying. We reprimanded Max, made sure Becker could get to places out of reach, but in the end, which we knew, that it had to be up to Becker. One swipe one night across Max's nose, when Becker had had enough was all it took. Now their relationship is good, and Max is wary of the cat LOL

Sugar and Becker have been together for years, so have a very close relationship. What I would do is make sure the cat has somewhere to escape so to speak, and try having a squirt bottle, to give the pup a squirt, with a firm no, and redirect him to toys, or into a training command, such as sit etc.

Keep the bottle handy at all times, and soon pup will learn what the bottle means. Eventually they should be fine, as puss too will exert some authority eventually..
Good luck
