Hey everyone.

I'm having a bit of trouble with house-training. The new girl is pretty good, has learnt not to wee on carpet. But here lies the problem, I take her out after she is fed, or after a nap, or after she has been playing, and she follows me but then loses control of her teeny bladder before we get there! Now i have to punish her because otherwise it would teach her to wee inside! I dont smack her btw, she gets a timeout for about 5 mins. When I let her out she knows what shes done and ra ra ra, but again it happens the next time? Any ideas?

You d on't punish a dog for doing what comes naturally, you ignore it, and take it out to let it finish its business. You will get better advice on here than I can give. Positive reenforcement is the thing, and consistency.

She gets alot of praise when she does the right thing. I find that timeout works, while I clean it up anyway, I don't like her being able to see me clean it up.

You have an 8 week old pup.. Pick it up take it outside don't let it go on the floor before it gets outside. Time outs don't teach anything to your dog except maybe in future to hide the accident or do it strategically behind furniture where you won't find it.

I haven't read any of your previous posts, but if your pup is only eight weeks old, I agree with MP. Don't even let those legs touch the ground until she has better control of her bladder. When she wakes up, eats, etc... carry her until outside.

Are you actually giving a time out after she uncontrollably leaks, yet before you give her a chance to empty her bladder outside? By the way in my opinion a dog or pup will never understand a time out. It is better to prevent the unwanted behavior before it starts....by being a little ahead of the pup.

Yep don't let her touch the ground--When our little dog Honey was having a lot of problems I would pick her up out of the crate and place her outside--that is the best way.

I agree with the others, if I removed my puppy from crate and put him down
to put leash on he would empty bladder seconds after feet touching ground.
I just self taught myself to carry him directly from crate to the yard.

Yes--even if you're not hitting her or some other abusive punishment, all it's going to do is slow you down in potty-training.

Pick her up next time. :) She's very young and doesn't have much bladder control (if any, really). She'll try hard for you, but you need to set her up for success. If something happens and she pees/poops on the floor again, just continue taking her out, and when she goes outside praise her to the moon--imagine she got you the winning lottery ticket, or she fetched you a new car instead of the tennis ball. She needs to know pottying outside makes mom VERY happy, and pottying inside gets her nothing.

:)

Yes, carry her out .... even if she started to go in the house . Dogs don't understand time out and you can clean the carpet after you have done right by her .
