Need some advice. I sold one of my doxie puppies 6 weeks ago. Since Yesterday the dog has been at the vet near death. The vet said she was severley dehydrated, flea infested and vomiting blood and had blood in her feces. As of this morning she was able to stand up. This person will not give her back to me. She won't pay the vet bill. She has stiffed this vet before and will do it again. But the vet is a very animal person and will do anything she can to save a dog. I have been in contact with the vet so I can have updates on the puppy. The police say I can file a neglect report, but since she took her to the vet it's not so much neglect. I don't want her to go back to this person. She blames me for the animal being sick. I haven't seen the pup for 2 weeks when she stayed at my house because she thought she was dying. I had her all weekend and she was fine. No blood in her stool nothing. The kids even said she was doing great when I saw them 4 days later. I'm just sick knowing one of my pups is being mistreated in this way. She has not kept up with the shots, so basically the puppy has no immunity at all. I always tell them I will do the next shots if they bring them up. If they live close enough, they always take me up on the offer. This way I can see how they are doing and see if they need any help with anything. Any other suggestions?

you should have had a contract. Then you could have taken the pup back because of her not following through. I don't know if there is anything you can do but maybe be more careful in the future.

Next time tell them they have to let you come and check out their house to make sure that it is okay to have a puppy and see how they act with the puppies. Then after they have the pup make sure that you check up on the pup and owner once in a while ot make sure that the owner is taking care of the pup.

I did have a contract. She signed it also. It states that if for any reason they can't keep the dog for the life of the dog they can return it, no questions asked. I aslo have in there about congenital and defects not detected on the sale of the puppy. What else can I put into the contract? Can I put in that I can take the pup back if there are any signs of neglect? Is that legal? The pup was fine intil 2 weeks ago.

How old was the pup when you sold her ?? Was she up on all her shots (parvo ? ) and flea treatment. I personally never sold any of my pups without referrals , personal knowledge and weekly phone calls. This really points out what breeders need to watch for .... ( and buyers too ! )

Sad News

I have kept in touch with the vet over the past few days to see how she was doing. She has taken a turn for the worse and passed away today. She was only 13 weeks old. The vet says she had parvo. They had moved into a new house that had it before and the puppy caught it. She never did anymore shots after she was bought, so she had no immunity. She was loaded with so many fleas she was anemic and very weak when she finally took her to the vet for treatment. She was starting to eat and her feces were getting more solid, but took a turn for the worse yesterday afternoon and passed awy this morning.

Pup

No legal action can be taken. I called the sherrif's department, they said I could file a neglect report, except that she took the dog to the vet for treatment, so it's not neglect as far as they are concerned. The Humane Society director said the same thing. Yes I did sell her at 7 weeks old, my mistake. She said she had had doxies before and that she had to get rid of tehm when she met her current husband. That should have been my first warning, but she had another dog already and lived in the same town I did, so I could keep in touch with the pup. I will never forgive myself for selling her the puppy. But she will never get another one from me either. And if I have to I will make sure she never gets another one from anybody I know either.

This is so sad :( This is probably why many shelters ask if you have rehomed a dog before and why. If there is a good reason like medical I'm sure many would understand that, but giving them away because a spouse did not like them is not a good sign.

I am glad to see you are very concerned about the puppy and that you follow up and try to make sure they get there shots. I am sure it does not need to be said that the puppy was taken away from its mom to soon, because the issue here was the owner neglect by not giving the required shots.

I am not sure if you can put in the contract that you will take them back if there are any signs of neglect? I don't know if thats legal anywhere, or even if it is, how it would be enforced.
