Friday evening I emailed our Dog Food Company (Blue Buffalo). You can see my email below. Saturday morning (a holiday weekend) I received a response that was better than I could have expected. See below. If you want to know that your pet is safe from all this Pet Food Crisis, Choose Blue Buffalo.
~Cheryl. (I have nothing to do with this Dog Food Company, just a concerned Pet owner who wants to share with others)
Best wishes to all our beloved furry ones.

Message: Thank you. Thank you for providing a wonderfully nutritious food for my dog. He's part of our family and I'm so thankful that in the midst of this horrible "National Pet Food Crisis" I can rest assure that my puppy is safe. I’m a massage therapist and therefore I come in contact with a lot of people who trust my opinion. I have referred numerous pet owners to switch to Blue Buffalo and have found their pets to be pleased with the results as well. Our Gizmo loves his blue buffalo and it makes me feel good to know he’s getting the very best. From everything I’ve read it seems your company is very conscious of its ingredients and hopefully knows where each one is coming from. As more and more pet foods are recalled, so many pet owners right now are confused and lost with what to feed their beloved pets. I will continue to strongly recommend Blue Buffalo. Thank you for that privilege.
~Cheryl Adams (Gizmo’s Mom)
(My best to all the animals that may have consumed the contaminated food, somehow wishing them health in their future).

Dear Cheryl,
Thank you for taking the time out to write us. And thank you for your interest in BLUE. B BLUE products have never been produced by Menu Foods and we are not affiliated with them in any way. In addition, all of our formulas are gluten free and we do not use wheat in any of our products either. Our manufacturing partners are all USDA inspected and approved. Our ingredients are sourced only from the finest suppliers of human grade food ingredients. All ingredients are tested for quality and safety by our manufacturing partners before they are accepted and all finished products are also tested for safety on a regular basis. The machines are cleaned after each run as well. We do not get any of our ingredients from China or overseas. All of our ingredients come from US suppliers.

Both our manufacturing partners are approved by AIB (American Institute of Baking) which is widely recognized as the best and most highly respected safety and sanitation inspection firm in the human food business. BLUE is involved from the start in the selection of ingredients that go into our formulas. Each supplier must certify the origin of the ingredients by USDA requirements. So, we will know if the ingredient is native or imported.
Product quality is our #1 priority. We have strict controls in place to make sure that our ingredients meet the highest quality standards. These controls include the following:
Certificate of origin for all ingredients
COA’s (certificates of analysis) on all our ingredients prior to accepting
Testing of each ingredient for known toxins prior to accepting
Testing during production to insure that our formulas meet our nutritional specifications.
Testing after production to insure product stability and freshness.

We use a government certified lab(Midwest Labs) to test for normal analyticals, toxins, bacterial contamination, and spoilage.

All of our products are free of all steroids, hormones, antibiotics and by-products. BLUE life Protection Formula with LifeSOurce Bits is a revolutionary food that combines the superior nutrition of Human Grade Ingredients with the protection of active nutrients and antioxidants. The first ingredient is Real Chicken, Lamb, or Fish. BlUE focuses on Whole Grains like Whole Ground Brown Rice and a Whole Ground Barley. We do not use Processed grains like White Rice, Brewers Rice or Rice Bran as they don't retain all their Nutrients once processed. We use fresh Vegetables and fruit instead of corn, wheat and soy which are linked to common animal allergies.

What separates BLUE from other premium brands would be our LIfeSOurce Bits. Our Life Source Bits are processed using a cold press that does NOT subject the essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to the extreme heat necessary for cooking the proteins. In other foods these ingredients are processed along with the protein source (chicken, lamb, etc.) and are heated at temperatures over 250 deg. F. This heating causes vitamins and minerals to lose up to 70% of their potency. The vitamins and minerals (LifeSource Bits) are then dry blended with our highly nutritious base food to deliver the two-part food you see in our bags. These LifeSource Bits are specifically formulated to provide three key functions...1) Immune System Heatlth 2) Life Stage Nutrients 3) Defense against Environmental Toxins.

" The AAFCO Dog and Cat Food Nutrient Profiles and the AAFCO Feeding Protocols are the only AAFCO recognized methods for substantiating the nutritional adequacy of 'complete and balanced' pet food."

BLUE meets all of, and exceeds most of, the Nutrient Profiles set by AAFCO. In addition, this is accomplished with quality ingredients unmatched by any other brand on the market.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me. Once again, thank you for your interest in BLUE.

Best regards,

Samantha Wuhrer

There are higher quality foods out there, for a better price, that aren't mixed in with the recalls either.

Are there other Brands you would recommend? We felt lucky to find Blue Buffalo as Pet Smart didn't seem to carry many 'truly nutritious' pet food brands. Do you go directly to the company to get other brands?

I feed Innova Adult and get it from a small independent grooming shop a few miles from my house. There's also a bigger natural pet food store about a half-hour from me that carries everything from Innova to Canidae (highly recommended by people on here), Solid Gold, Eagle Pack Holistics and a couple others I haven't really looked at. A few other good foods are Timberwolf Organics (which you can buy directly from the company via their website), Orijen (mostly a Canadian brand though) and Natural Balance is pretty decent. That one you can buy at Petco.

Also, a lot of the stores (at least the ones in my area) that are on the Canidae store locator sell almost all the high quality dog foods.

I followed your link to another forum. Dated 10/26/06 The writer of the post claimed that Blue Buffalo stated on their website in their ingredients included a vitamin k a menadione compound. I Have visited their website and I do have the ingredients posted in an earlier and have not found this ingredient.

That link was update 3/30/07.

Here are some links to Blue Buffalo ingredients. I didn't collect all I found as it was too much work, so I am giving you a sampling of BB foods with menadione in them for your own assessment.

Why does the letter claim that their foods/products are gluten free when they contain barley as an ingredient? That is a very high gluten grain!

I didn't know that Showpug. I never thought much about barley. Thanks for the heads up. I just know Mordy wouldn't have that on her site if it weren't the truth, so I just wanted to share it. She's always on top of that stuff.

Jammer, I'm sure somebody will come along who knows about your food and give you an honest opinion.

Edit: you might want to post your question over at the dog food forum.
