Most books I've read mention that beagles aren't noisy dogs.. but my Beagle keeps whining and barking especially when she wants to pee or wants me to play with her... I got her two months ago and she wasn't this noisy... I am also crate-training her.. Is it because she feels too lonely in her crate? I try putting toys inside.. but it doesnt seem to help :(

I almost dread having Beagles come in for boarding...they are very vocal, bayers etc. :) haha
They are sweet dogs, but keep in mind they are scent hounds and being a scent hound they need tons of exercise to occupy the mind and tire them out. They have incredible stamina.

My boyfriends parents have a beagle called monty, and one of the reason they got him is because when they did their research it said beagle's dont bark. Boy, were they wrong, he has the loudest bark I've ever heard! So deep! Especially when I take shadow (my staff) over to visit, they seem to have barking contests! He's 18 months now, and I dont think he did it when they first had him, only when he got older. Ive never heard him baye, or howl, I dont think he ever has. Maybe she'll grow out of it?

Breed books, you have to love them. Beagles aren't the worst barkers in the world (to me, anyway, but I'm a collie person so I'm kind of deaf) but they bay like the end of the world. There's a pack of them down the street, and every time the fire engine blows, there they go.

What book were you reading ??? Beagles bark like crazy! Luckily my last beagle didn't bark so much unless I told him "speak," but of the ones that lived near me, they are one vocal breed. Not only that, but they tend to hold on to their barks long (baying) and let out a loud Arooooooooh.

If you want a dog that WILL NOT BARK, get a Basenji.

Really? I've heard quite the opposite. That they're very vocal! Big barkers.

I never knew German shepherds were so vocal. But unfortunaetly, they are.

They're also very strong-willed and STUBBORN, from what I've heard. The reason they don't bark is because they CAN'T!

Also, Boxers aren't big barkers either.

Anybody know of any other breeds that aren't very vocal?

This could be difficult to answer...haha
In the boarding kennel the dogs I find that are not vocal are: Newfoundland dogs-I get a lot of Newf's in for boarding and never have had a barking problem...if I only have Newf's in the kennel is as quite as a church. I find many show dogs are very quite, I have a few Goldens that come in from show homes that don't make a peep and Goldens from pet homes that would drive you insane with their barking. Some indivudual dogs are very quite, I have a few Pyr's that come in that are very quite, Cocker Spaniels that don't make any noise, Bulldogs that are quite...sometimes it depends greatly on the dogs upbringing..and in a kennel environment even some of the most quite dogs at home can be barking maniacs at the kennel...almost as if its party time when they walk in the door.
The breeds I find very vocal are: German Shepherds, American Eskimo dogs (why they keep this breed around I'll never know...sorry to offend anyone ;) ), most Terriers are barky, Husky's...oh my are they noisy, Basset Hounds, Lab's are by far the worst...all northern breeds can be noisy.

All of my dogs are very quite and bark only when it's neccessary. I never trained them to be quite, they just are. It's wonderful, they must see the the possibility of my going insane if they drive me to it...haha

It's deep and loud-- that just may be the breed. But the only time Rocky barks very deep and loud--angrily, is he sees someone on our property, just anyone he sees as an intruder.

When a b!tch sees her pups doing something wrong she gives a very low bark. So maybe your dog might be trying to tell you something.

I don't own a beagle nor do I know anyone who does but you could ask beaglelovergirl if hers is like that as well.

Like I said though, could just be the breed.

I can't believe shelties didn't make your list. They are quite the yappers! :D

There's nothing wrong with your little beagle, it's perfectly normal.

Beagles are so much fun to have ! Everything with their stubborness, digging in the trash, wanting food, and barking is superceded by their personalities.

Big Dog..you didn't live next door to the two Great Pyr's that i did..all night..everynight..and the fact that the way my house sat the sound bounced around the concrete outside and managed to sound as loud in my bedroom as it was if i was standing right next to them...in the summer i had to switch to sleeping in the living room..all night..every night. I asked the man that lived on the other side how in the world he managed to sleep and he said he just took his hearing aid out..slept like a baby.

Were they outside dogs? If that's the case, then I guess that's why.

The one I met, the owner said she's never heard him bark... and my dad's aunt had 2 of 'em, they would herd the sheep and protect them, etc. They never barked.
