Gambit has developed a worrying behavior lately. He goes with me to work, but we have to park in staff parking, which involves a walk down a hill to the clinic parking lot. Going the long way around is not feasible, as it would be going down a busy road with no sidewalks early in the morning. I would prefer that we not be road gravy.

There is a grand total of one house we must pass on the hill. This house has a fenced in yard, and the worlds most obnoxious schnauzer living in it. The dog is an inside pet, but randomly is out early maybe two days out of every five. When he is out, he charges the fence and attempts to fight with my boys.

Gambit wants to kill this dog. No exaggeration, as soon as we pull up in the parking lot he is on high alert, just hoping that the dog is outside. If it is, I literally have to drag him down the hill, snarling, choking and foaming at the mouth. Think Shutzhund dog hitting the decoy.

Nothing I do makes any difference to him once he sees or hears the dog. I do not let him leave the car until he is focused on me, but he can tell the dog is out before I can, and it's all over.

As a note: our groomer grooms this dog. The last time she groomed him, she looked out the window and saw Gambit staring in at them. He stayed that way the entire time she had the dog on the table, just giving it the hard stare. She was actually a little scared.

The schnauzer does not do daycare, and they have never, and will never meet face to face.

What can I do to make this easier on us both? I have to walk down this hill, and I obviously can not control when this man lets his dog out. I walk my boys as far on the other side of it as possible, but they can still see/hear the dog.

Gambit does not react this way to any other dogs, and the strength of his reaction is frightening.

If there's no rhyme or reason to when the dog is out, could you possibly ask about the schedule? Idk if you come in at the same time each day, but perhaps ask the owner if they can keep the dog inside as best as possible during that time?

Or, could you park in the client lot and bring Gambit in, then move to staff parking?
