I am a camp counselor at my job. I have these two dogs ones a lab and one a German Shepherd mix. The lab all day this dog has the same look on his face. If I am not in there he comes to the window and looks at me with these crazy faces. I just wish I could get a good pic of the face he makes. The look just kind of freaks me out. It's like he is in shock I am not in there. Then we walks off.

And comes back and do it again untill I come in. And then when I come in he jumps up and try and stick his tongue in my mouth. And then when he is done with all that he is always right behind me. Like I am his body guard??

And then with this German Shepherd mix he does the jumping thing. But when I call him he tucks his head and tail. And I don't know why. It's like he is Afraid of me. I mean is it due to I give him LOTS of hugs and kisses?

Many dogs don't like being hugged. But there are so many reasons why a dog might not be feeling comfortable around you.

He doesn't seem to be uncomfortable, I mean he follows me around and everything. It's just when I call him over.

Do you work at Camp Bow Wow? If so, so do I! Do you have a work camera, capable of taking short videos of what you're talking about?

Just because a dog follows you doesn't mean it is or is not comfortable interacting with you.

Have you had the dog long?

Did you get the shepherd mix from someone else? How was he trained?

The reason I ask is my aunt has a german shepherd that she got second hand. The dog was such a wreck the previous owners were going to put her down. They had been "training" her with an electric collar, to 'do' all sorts of things.

Candy would do exactly what you are describing. She would come when you called, but she acted very low key and submissive, like she was doing it but she was frightened to do it at the same time. When the e-collar people were teaching her to come, they pretty much called her, and then would zap her when she headed away from them. Essentially, the only choice to avoid pain/punishment was to come and she had to find out by trial and error.

If your dog was subjected to a similar technique that could be why he acts like that. It took a few years of confidence building to pull her out of it, but now she comes with her head up and tail wagging.

Ah... well then likely the dog has had some 'bad' experiences with people/training at some point. E collar, or CM style training often produces stressed behaviours like that.

Ah, just what is a camp counselor? As for the shep mix, don't look at him in the eyes and turn your body away from him and don't lean over him, he'll be more willing to approach then.

The lab, turn your back on him and only give him attention when he has four on the floor.

It's like camp but for dogs.

Yes, I do all the above. But with the lab it seems the more we ignore him. The worse he get's.

That sounds like a pretty neat job.

Do you guys use treats at all? If it was me I'd get something marvelous like little cubes of Nature's Balance chubs and pop one in the shep mix's mouth every single time he came. That might change his outlook a little.

Ohhhhh I wasn't aware that there were other doggy daycare attendants who were also called camp counselors. Good to know!

Yea, we can't have food in the room. But I do let him follow me around the job until his mom comes.
