I'm SO glad someone posted about this
There's a lady in my apartment complex that my boyfriend and I have dubbed the "Lab Lady."
She has these two huge labs (maybe mixes, or badly bred) that she NEVER keeps on leashes. Ever.
Twice, Orchid and I were walking (on leash as always) and these two dogs charge at her barking. She was little then, so I picked her up in my arms, because these other dogs were showing teeth and had hackles up. They nipped at my arms to get to Orchid.
I probably shouldn't have picked her up, but she was so little, and I'd rather get a few nips then have her be injured and have a bad incident with strange dogs.
Lab Lady came out laughing, and said, "Oh, I know! It's just natural" and called for her dogs. Of course, they just ignored her.
I said, "I know its hard to have a big dog in a small place, but you really should keep them on leashes. There are so many cars- plus, it's an apartment regulation." (Here I go, being too nice again)
She just laughed me off. Since then, Orchid and I avoid that place. However, I did see them go afer some older lady's chihuahau- the old lady was really upset.
Those are some big mean dogs!
Anyway, to the OP, I totally hear you. Truly, I don't care if dogs are off lead, but if they ARE off lead, then they should be VERY well trained so that they don't harass other (possibly more dangerous, in your case anyway) animals.
