Ok, so the GOOD news is that Buddy's mites are NOT back. Thank goodness. We are going to keep a close eye on him of course and keep putting cream on the areas that were infected before and hopefully he won't have any future problems with it. Whew.

However, he does have an awful ear infection. Which I knew. :( I knew he had an ear infection, I just didn't think it was that bad. We got him in as soon as we could to see his vet.

Anyways, they had to sedate him to get deep down to flush his ear out. :( Poor Buddy. He's going to come home with meds later tonight and I think we're done with swimming (its getting too cold anyways) for this year.

But now I'm thinking maybe we should find another back up vet in case his originial vet is not available. Any words of advice on this? We go to a large vet hospital but only one vet seems competent enough to handle situations. The others seem poorly educated and lack compassion for animals.

Buddy and Banzai both love our vet, she is an awesome lady and well, she can't work 7 days/week in case something happens to one of our boys when she's not around (although we do have her home phone for extreme emergencies).

Sometimes I feel like I fail Buddy... with all that is always wrong with him, I know it's not our fault, but gosh, the poor dog just never seems to catch a break.

Bronki was like that,it always happened to him, yet he was the most special of all. I don't think you should feel that you fail him, instead you support him for the best life he could possibly have. Love is felt each time i read your posts. I clean mary's ears with an ear wash a couple times a week and have the ear medicine on hand always. She has trouble with one ear not the other and of course there is the eye problem too. Just the way it goes.

also i dont know why an ear infection should cost so much! I would check around and see if their is a humane society clinic to handle the minor things,..ours is fabulous! It was cost you no more then 35 here.

Buddy is LUCKY to have an owner who cares so much about him. I'm glad his mites aren't back, but his poor ear :(

I would look around for another "just in case" vet. Seems like a good idea.

Oh, they had to sedate him, which is hefty. They also gave him an antibiotic shot. They were going to do a slide of the junk that came out of his ear to see what it is exactly. The ear flush, medication to come home with along with ear wash and some sort of ointment. He has to stay there for the day, so hospitalization fee and vet tech fee...it all adds up eventually. :(

Office visit: 27.95
Sedation: 65.00
Ear Flush: 40.00
Injection: 40.00
Cytology: 25.00
Vet Tech: 6.00
Hospitalization: 20.00
Ointment: 21.00
Ear cleanser: 8.98
Antibiotic: 28.95
goodwinol: 16.22

Grand total $299.10

I doubt if they would anesthitize a dog for $35, that sounds awfully low.

We can't get pet insurance for Buddy, he had a pre-existing condition, so they wouldn't even take him anyways. But glad that you got some insurance for Smokey. :)

Don't ever think that you've failed him! You are tending to his needs very well... I know some very good people who really neglect their dogs' health out of lack of education, or just messed up priorities. You are not like that. We can all tell how much you love your dogs. He's lucky to have you!

surely our city isn't the only one with a humane society vet clinic, (not for profit!) have you looked around? It is a drive, about 30 minutes for me but that is nothing in gasoline compared to what the vets charge nearby.

I'm sure there is smkie, I'll look into it, butI want my dogs to get the best care possible. Thus, I am willing to pay for it. If it were too outrageous, I would have said something, but it all adds up on this one.

Buddy should be the poster child for dispelling the myth of "hybrid vigor". I mean that nicely, I swear!

Poor boy...I echo those who have said that he is really very lucky to have an owner like you who will spend this much on him on a fairly regular basis!
