One of our puppies started sneezing Saturday, and when I picked her up she had a runny nose. I called the vet to see if we should isolate her and he wanted to see them all immediately until I told him the fluids she was sneezing and coming out her nose were clear. She was stuffy and crying in her sleep. Then she started to hiccup - and what can I tell you, we're new parents and we were freaking out.

Vet said to wait and see how she did and by today (Monday) they're all sneezing and have runny noses (except mama). The good news is they are eating, sleeping and playing normally...and the first one to get sick isn't as stuffy as she was.

Could this be allergies? Should we press the vet? Aren't their immune systems too weak for something like this right now? (They are 16 days old.)There's a lot of what can only be described as sniffling going on in their box.

Puppies that young with any sign of respiratory illness should be seen by a Vet. I myself would not put it off.
Was the mother up todate on vaccines or had a titer done before becoming pregnant to ensure the pups would receive proper maternal antibodies?

Unfortunately - my dog was a stray who wasn't tested for pregnancy - she was vaccinated WHILE pregnant.

Thanks - I was really worried and the vet went from very concerned to not at all in seconds! I didn't know what to think!

Thanks so much. They made it through the worst of it - but I'm still hearing some sneezing. They have an appointment tomorrow.

I read that adult dogs sniffing each other's bottoms spreads dog's herpes - and that it has no impact on an adult dog's health - however it kills puppies. That is why they say not to let your pregnant or nursing mom around any other dogs for 3 weeks prior or after - and our dog did have contact prior since no one realized she was pregnant.

Thanks again for the post. I'll mention it to the vet tomorrow since he seems pretty wishy-washy about the situation.
