I have a 4 yr old (Remington) and an 11 week old (Beretta). How do I train the puppy to do the basics especially fetch without the older one getting in the way? i try leaving Remington in the house while I'm outside with Beretta trying to teach her to fetch and bring it back to me, but Remington just sits at the door and looks out with those sad eyes! I only have a certain area to do this as it is after dark when I get home and I have to use the flood lights. If Remington is out with us and I throw the ball, of course he gets it first. What do other people with multiple dogs do to give one on one time with each dog?

I take my 3 dogs on seperate walks, I train them in the back of my house (if its nice I do it outside in a vacant lot) while the others are in the living room with the TV on (otherwise they hear the clicker and go nuts).

The pup needs time alone with your to train. If you are matter of fact about it your older dog will be too. A pup should be trained in short sessions anyway so your older dog can tough it out. You can crate one and work the other, then swap. Some dogs learn from watching the other so you could take advantage of that angle too. You could also have your older dog in a down stay and keep going back and rewrading his stay while you are playing fetch with the pup- that way both are included.

Too bad for Remington ;). I work my dogs one at a time. Some of the not-working-at-the-moment dogs just give sad eyes, others SCREAM in absolute disdain that THEY are not the dog to be worked - then they get crated.

But the key is they ALL get worked - they all get their turn. Work/play with Beretta alone - ignore Remington's sad eyes, and when you are done with Beretta, work with Remington. He may be older and "know" it all, but he still needs to know that he will get his turn too. I would also alternate who gets worked first every day.

I agree with the others.

I just had to say that I love your clever names for your dogs. What's in line for your next dog? Winchester? Glock? Browning? How about for two dogs, Heckler and Koch? Tee hee hee.
